Dog Bad Breath Smells Like Fish

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How do I make my dog's horrible breath go away?
Her breath always stinks and I have tried parsley and I brush her teeth. Is there a remedy to bad breath? If smells like dead fish and its really gross. Whenever she yawns, chews on her toys or licks something/someone, it seems like the whole room stinks up. Help?

    • ANSWER:
She probably needs a dental - her teeth cleaned professionally by the vet. She may also have some infected teeth.
Please get her looked at by your vet - bad teeth can seriously affect a dog's health, it is more than unpleasant, it is unhealthy in the extreme.

  2. QUESTION:
How often should my miniature daschund have her anal glands expressed?
Wondering if this could be a source of her bad breath (it smells somewhat like rotten fish). Kinda scared to do it, too. If it can be avoided, I'd rather not go there.

    • ANSWER:
i have a minie weener to , your dogs breath is bad because she needs her teath cleaned (have a vet do it ). as for its glands like someone else said if it,s draggin its butt they need to be squezed . have a vet or groomer do it because what comes out has a very unpleasant smell that you dont want on your clothes.

  3. QUESTION:
Do they have any special mints for cats?
My Cat has very bad breath especially when he goes into my face. His breath smells like fish from his cat food. Is it just the way cats are or is there like a mint. I have heard of dog mints but I don't know about cat mints.

    • ANSWER:
Bad kitty breath may be a symptom of bad teeth. Have you looked into your cat's mouth and teeth lately? Is there tartar? A build-up of plaque and tartar not only causes bad breath, it will also cause lot of mouth, teeth and systemic issues later if not addressed early. You need to brush kitty's teeth regularly with an appropriate cat toothpaste, tooth brush or finger brush. There are many sites on the web that shows you ow this is done. I have been using a product called "Petzlife" with good success. It removes plaque and tartar - and bad breath. If the tartar build up is not bad, you can apply the gel to kitty's teeth every other day or every 2 days and brush at least once a week. (the stuff you buy from Petco or Petsmart are virtually useless! - beleive me, I tried them all and none work at all - waste of money).

  4. QUESTION:
Does your dogs breath smell like a rotting fish carcass?
Everytime my dogs yawn I want to just lay down and die (hah sorry im feeling dramatic today).

I brush my dogs teeth like 3 times per week. This is normal right? For dogs to have bad breath?

    • ANSWER:
no my dogs breath does not smell like that :O) it did when she had a tooth abscess so you might want to have a vet take a look ...

  5. QUESTION:
How do you fix bad dog breath?
Sugar has got some awful dog breath and it needs to be fixed! It is wretched! It smells like fish. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes:

      1) take your dog to the vet for a cleaning

      2) going forward, brush your dogs teeth 2x a week - using doggy toothpaste and finger brushes

      3) going forward, feed your dogs raw meaty bones, like beef ribs and chicken drumsticks.

if you do not do this, then you will eventually

      4) be going to the vet for extractions, and the dogs breath, oral health, and overall health will be worse than ever.

There is no easy path to this - like just buying some magic product at Petsmart.

If you really care about your dog, you will not just go buy some dentastix and think you're all set. You will do the above.

  6. QUESTION:
What are some good ways to get rid of your dog's bad breath?
My dog takes like fish pills soo her breath smells really bad all the time. It's gross. So does anyone have any ideas to get rid of the bad breath????

    • ANSWER:
My dogs love Greenies, which I've found to help. I also brush their teeth frequently and that's very helpful in keeping the odor away.

  7. QUESTION:
my dog has really fishy smelling breath. whats the cause and how can i get rid of it?
my dog has breath that smells like rotten tuna fish. she has had this bad breath for about a year now and we can't get it to go away. nobody wants her kisses because it is so bad, and when she yawns you can smell in if you're standing anywhere in the same room as her. what is the cause of it, and how can we get rid of it?

    • ANSWER:
Have you checked her teeth? Some dogs are prone to tooth decay which causes really rotten breath. Take a look to see if her teeth are dirty, especially near the gums. If so, you should take her to the vet to have her teeth cleaned professionally, then keep up the maintenance by brushing her teeth regularly and giving her teeth cleaning treats.

  8. QUESTION:
How can I tell my friend that she smells and that she should practice better hygiene?
My one friend always smells like wet dog or fish. Her teeth are bad and her breath stinks. My other friend never washes her hands after she pees. I want to tell them something, but I don't know how to do so in a polite manner. Any advice <:0

    • ANSWER:
Just buy them for their birthdays stuff like fruity shampoo, body wash and soap along with the usual presents! Don't tell them about their hygiene as you may lose them asd friends because saying that even in a nice way could hurt their feelings! Alternatively if other people have noticed their hygiene problems say that they said they smell etc and they will start to wash more as they will kno ppl think they smell

  9. QUESTION:
why does my dogs breath always smell like fish?
I don't feed them fish but their breath smells fishy.I had them all wormed at the vet last year. could it be worms again? and they always want to lick everyone?
no, my yard is fenced in.I tried alittle baking soda in their drinking water. That seem to help, but I don't want to make them sick.

    • ANSWER:
Have him checked out by the vet to make sure that the bad breath is not a sign of a more serious issue. After that, try brushing their teeth regularly and giving them dental treats. Bright Bites are a good one for you to try since they are designed to clean a dog's teeth and freshen their breath while they chew.

  10. QUESTION:
Is it normal for a dogs breath to stink when they lose teeth?
Her breath really smells.. like old fish. Its not THAT bad, but i can definitely smell it when she opens her mouth, breathes on me, or licks me, it's not totally bothersome, but definitely not enjoyable either. I can only imagine that it smells so bad because she has been losing a lot of her teeth lately. Can losing her baby teeth cause this problem or should i take her to the vet?

    • ANSWER:
Yes that the smell of old blood.
you can try drops to freshen her breath you can either get ones you drop directly on her tongue or some you can drop in the water bowl
      both are completely natural ingredients.
since she's loosing her teeth brushing them may not be a great option. but you can buy a dog toothbrush kit and do that every couple days.
she's a puppy loosing her baby teeth and it's bleeding which she's probably swallowing. Totally normal.

  11. QUESTION:
My dog has bad fish breath, what could the cause of this be?
Our chocolate lab has had very fishy breath since we got her as a puppy and she is now a year old and still has that fishy breath. One day her breath isn't too bad the next day it smells like she ate a dead fish. Tell me what you think I should do.

    Thanks,
    John
No, she doesn't eat fish or get into the trash. Could this be from "omega foods"? I found an article online about it.

    • ANSWER:
Dog bad breath is primarily caused by bacteria on the top of the tongue that produce those bad smells, just like in humans. Dog treats (equal to mints, gum, or mouthwash in humans) will cover up bad breath for a short time, however, then do not cure bad breath because they do not get rid of the bacteria, just like in humans. Your dog can not smell her own bad breath, just like most humans can not smell their own bad breath. I have witnessed a Vet clean the tongue of a dog with an OraBrush tongue cleaner to cure the dog's bad breath. OraBrush was developed for humans but it works very well on dogs. Plaque buildup on your dog's teeth can also contribute to bad breath but it is not the primary cause of bad breath. Look at the top of your dog's tongue for some "white stuff". You can also look at your tongue for some "white stuff". To cure bad breath you must get rid of the primary cause of bad breath.

  12. QUESTION:
How old must dog be for dental?
My dog's breath REEKS. Seriously, it smells like a mixture of fish, poop, and garbage. The vet said he is too young to have a dental now. He's almost 2 years old. How old does he have to be for a dental?!
(My dad took him to the vet and didn't ask -_- )
We feed him a good diet, by the way--Blue Buffalo brand dry food. He's a Maltese.

    • ANSWER:
2 years old is a little young for there to be a great deal of build up on the teeth. Usually heavier build up starts to show around 3-4 years of age.

When you look at your dog's teeth is there a large amount of plaque built up already? If so, you may want to take a look at changing her diet...but if the build up is heavy enough, the vet should be willing to do a teeth cleaning. It sounds to me like your vet doesn't think she NEEDS them cleaned yet.

If she doesn't have a lot of build up, perhaps you should look into other causes of bad breath, such a health problems or diet. More info: http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/guide/bad-breath-dogs

  13. QUESTION:
Why does my dogs breath smell like fish?
It smells really gross. This just started 2 days ago. He is a 5 month old puppy. We brush his teeth and give him greenies dental chews. Do you think its the food he eats? We switched it about 2 weeks ago its excellent food (great life buffalo) but my other dog eats it as well and her breath doesn't stink. Any ideas what could be causing this? What caj I do to cure this?

    • ANSWER:
He likes to secretly eat the bitches out! Haha. I know bad joke. But seriously...fishy bad breath is quite normal in puppies caused by them teething. Check her teeth for where adult teeth may be coming in or for redness and swelling of gum. If all looks okay and he is eating okay you are probably fine. If you have a hard time checking or arent sure have your vet look. Puppies usually stop teething around 6-8 months. Make sure you also check that he isnt eating feces. Even just cleaning his hind quarters can cause bad breath especially if he has some kind of intestinal parasite. If he hasnt been vaccinated against worms Id suggest you check to make sure he doesnt have any. Chances are if his poop looks normal he doesnt but ask a vet to be sure and get him vaccinated. My personal opinion, its just thenormal bad puppy breath from teething and you just need to wait until he grows out of it. Give him ice to chew, it will help him teeth faster by loosening his puppy teeth and allowing his adult teeth to grow, as well as sooth his gums. If he doesnt want to chew it try adding something good to it like meat shavings. OR other trick is to take and old rag or tshirt and soak it in water adn freeze that and give him that to chew on. Good luck with your pup.

  14. QUESTION:
What can I do about my dogs bad breath?
I have taken him to the vet who says his teeth are fine. we give him Greenies, they made no difference. We bought the mint stuff to add to his water. No change. It smells like fish!!! He is eight years old. I know that they says this can be a sign of something more serious. I just don't know what else to do. I brush his teeth which he hates.

    • ANSWER:
It would be helpful if he had one of his dog friends tell him that he had halitosis than if you did. He wont take it so personally.

He could have stomach problems, so have your vet examine him to see what the underlying cause is.

  15. QUESTION:
How much mint can a dog eat?
My dog's breath smells pretty bad, even after we brush her teeth. (The dog toothpaste itself smells bad!) I have a ton of mint plants, and I chew mint leaves to freshen my own breath. Could I put some mint leaves in her food? I've read that it's non-toxic, but I suppose it could still upset her stomach. Has anyone ever tried this?

*She doesn't have bad breath in a way that indicates she is unhealthy. She has been to a vet recently and her teeth are fine. Her food just smells like fish...so her breath smells fishy.

    • ANSWER:
They are non-toxic, but you really should be careful how much you give to her - dogs immune system is very different from ours, so they might get stomachache if they eat too much of it.
But... I don't think it would help if you put it in a dog food, since it smells bad. You can try though...
If you are able to make her eat it afterward it would be better... Unfortunately most of the dogs won't even touch mint leaves.
Either way do not use more than 2-3 leaves a day.

  16. QUESTION:
How do I fix my dogs gross breath? She is just a puppy so does not need a teeth cleaning.?
She is a 5 mo pomeranian. We give her dentabones etc. but those definitely do not help. Brushing her teeth also does not help. It smells like cat food or fish or something. Gross!

    • ANSWER:
She may be loosing her baby teeth. Sometimes when the teeth get loose the spot where the tooth was gets inflamed and and smells a bit like something rotten. I am not talking about puppy breath. See if some of her teeth are loose and if the gum is red around the area. It may go away once she has all of her adult teeth. Keep brushing though. It's great to get her started now when she is young. It's something you can do for her that has a real health benefit. I wish every one would brush there dogs teeth. I have had to do dental cleanings on some really disgusting mouths.
It is also possible the smell could be coning from her stomach. My dog (has had her teeth cleaned) still gets bad breath sometimes if she has an upset stomach. If its really stinky you should probably have your vet take a look at her mouth.
EDIT: If you do give your dog a breath mint as Sophia suggested be very careful some mints as well as gum have xylitol in them which is very toxic to dogs. Always check the label.

  17. QUESTION:
My dog always smells no matter how much we clean him? What can I do?
He just smells all the time, we bath him every weekend and even afterwards he still stinks!! He also has bad breath, we give him his dentist sticks every morning and night, also he has a bone toy that is for bad breath but doesn't make a difference, anyone got any tips on what I could do or buy?
He's just out of the vet and had a full check up groom and all
    @smartsinger aren't you just a eff'n ray of sunshine!! :)

    • ANSWER:
So what did the vet say about the smell or your groomer? Surely you mentioned it & asked for an opinion or thoughts - since you were paying for their services.

      Solving your problem:
For starters, have the vet or groomer empty the ANAL glands. Doubtful they will do it unless asked. If the dog has food allergies they could need emptying on a weekly, or bi-weekly basis. (You could learn how to do this, but feeding a better quality food & more FIBER) often helps. By fiber I suggest adding leafy green veggies like: kale, spinach, collards, mustard greens & asparagus spears to the diet. (You can buy all but the latter in frozen format & microwave a cereal bowl full) for daily feeding. Mix with plain yogurt, or canned food, if needed.

Licking his butt could also cause the bad breath, if he has anal gland problems or an infection. Dogs lick, to try & release them. (It sort of smells like DEAD FISH or skunk.)

Next the mouth. Buy a tooth scaler (metal) & sold in dog catalogs & learn how to remove tartar/plaque off the dog's teeth. Next buy toothpaste for dogs & a brush and use it at least weekly. Allowing or encouraging chewing on raw bones isn't a bad idea to help clean teeth, but may not always clean the teeth completely, if you've got hardened plaque, unless you start with cleaner teeth, first.

If the skin has a yeast infection you might try a shampoo to treat that, but you can bathe dogs too often & dry it out. Be sure to use a coat conditioner. If the skin seems or quickly gets greasy, there is a health problem.

  18. QUESTION:
Does anyone feed their dog Herring and Sweet potato dry dog food from California Natural?
It's a little more expensive than what I usually buy, and don't know if my dog would like it. Let me know if anyone has any experience with this flavor. Thanks!
He also had really bad allergies, and I think he needs a non-grain diet. Is rice grain?

    • ANSWER:
This is the only food (and flavor) that I feed my dogs. My wirehaired dachshund has mild allergies and gets rashes on his skin - this food keeps his skin perfectly clear and healthy. My shih tzu has extreme food intolerances and will have very bad diarrhea if she eats anything other than fish and sweet potato based foods. This food keeps her stomach happy and stools firm. It has also made their coats extremely soft and shiny, and eyes bright. My vet recommended this formula and uses it herself.
Yes, the food does smell fishy. However, I, personally, haven't had a problem with my dogs' breath smelling bad because of it. I also haven't had a problem with my dogs having gas. The main purpose of this formula is to be gentle on the digestive tracts so it shouldn't cause too much gas. However, if your dog eats it very fast, that in itself could cause gas from excess air consumption.
Both of my dogs LOVE the flavor of this formula... however, all dogs are different. It's definitely worth trying out for a month or so to see how your dog adapts...

  19. QUESTION:
Is there anything that helps a cat to have good breath?
I'm surprised at how continuously bad my newer cat's breath is. Would there be anything that might help this?

    • ANSWER:
You could try Pet Toothpaste, usually available from most pet stores. I use this for my dogs, but never found it necessary for my cats. It usually is fish or chicken flavored, and unscented, but cleans tartar off the teeth which makes for better breath. Trying some special dental health foods may help, if you don't like the brushing idea.
No this is not masking the smell, it is actually cleaning the teeth, I do agree though, if your cat does have any other unusual behavior such as being overly tired or loss of appetite, you should definitely take s/he to the vet. Does your cat seem to have problems chewing things? S/he may have gum disease.

  20. QUESTION:
What is causing my dog to smell so bad?
I have a two/three-year-old white German Shepherd female. She's spayed, current on shots and has no health conditions that we know of. Recently, she started smelling extremely bad, usually after laying down for awhile, and this isn't usual dog order. She will be laying seven feet away from me and I will be overwhelmed with a horrible almost stale/moldy feet smell. (I kind of reminds me of rotten fritos chips.) We gave her a thorough bathing but the smell has been coming back. The thing is, it isn't always there, like it only seems to come after she's been lying down for awhile. I'm fairly sure it isn't gas, it smells nothing like that, and she has been on the same diet for over a year but I haven't been able to figure out what's making her smell so bad. Any ideas on whats causing this or tips on how to eliminate this horrible odor?
She's not an outdoor dog at all, and so far, I haven't found anything dead or smelly in my backyard. I hadn't thought of an ear infection, but I will definately look into that. Thank you so much :)

    • ANSWER:
check her breath...her teeth might be bad or it may be stomach problems
lastly... find the pile of rotting fish she has been rolling in,
a vet check might be the best

  21. QUESTION:
I have a Chihuahua and her breath smells really bad. What can I do to remedy this problem?
(It kind of smells like bad fish! ) Please help you can smell her breath when she pants and its bad! lol help!

    • ANSWER:
Food - What is she eating? did she EAT any fish? Bad diet can result in bad food. http://dogfoodproject.com http://dogfoodanalysis.com
Teeth - How is her oral hygiene? Overall, I would recommend you brush her teeth. They sell edible dog toothpaste + brush at pet stores. get one of those and brush her teeth. If you find yourself incapable of brushing her because she squirms, bites, or fidgets, just get a groomer to do the job for you. It is recommended to brush her teeth at least 2-3 times a week, but it's bretter every day.
Treats - Don't feed her too many treats! Most treats these days have corn and stuff in them, hard for dogs to digest. Only use treats as a quick snack or training tool, nothing more.
Mints - I really don't care for dog mints, and they barely get the job done. They only work for a short amount of time.
Just brush her teeth or get a check-up with the vet if that doesn't work.

  22. QUESTION:
why does my dogs breath smell all of a sudden?
i have a 2year old dog whos breath over the past 2 days has smelt awful!! sort of rotten. she has never had it before. any ideas? am quite worried. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
If it came out of nowhere, it could be her anal glands. If she's been licking her butt a lot, she may have partially unblocked an impacted anal gland. That will definitely give the dog horrid breath that smells sort of like rotting meat and fish. If that's the problem, she needs to have her glands expressed. The breath will clear up on its own once the gland problem is resolved.

It could be dental or periodontal disease also. When you look in her mouth, are her gums puffy? Any redness at the gumline? Those are signs of gum disease. How do her teeth look? White? Or is there brown or yellow gunk on them, especially up at the gumline? These are signs she needs a cleaning by the vet.

Another, less likely possibility is that she has some type of organ disease as several of these cause very distinct types of bad breath.

In any event, it sounds like you will need to take her to the vet for a check up. Good luck!

  23. QUESTION:
How do I make my cat's breath smell better?
We just adopted this 2-3 year old cat, and I noticed tonight that her breath is AWFUL! It smells like a garbage disposal, and she's really sweet so she likes to be in my face but...no.

Anyone have any pet-friendly tips? I know that the "Greenies" for dogs is supposed to improve breath, but I never had much luck with those when I gave them to my pomeranian, and I don't know if they make them for cats.

    • ANSWER:
They do make feline Greenies (my cats LOVE them), but neither the dog or cat Greenies are really supposed to improve bad breath. They are just supposed to help keep the mouth clean in general.

I'd recommend having a vet check her teeth. Often, tooth and gum disease is the cause of bad breath in pets. A dental cleaning can really help.

After the dental cleaning, consider brushing her teeth. You will need a soft toothbrush (they make different kinds of pet toothbrushes, including ones that you wear on your finger) and pet toothpaste (not human toothpaste). Pet toothpaste is safe to be swallowed and used in cats and dogs, and comes in several flavors (like fish and chicken).

Get her used to brushing gradually. It takes time - so just break it into several steps (like getting her used to your hands around her face first, then lifting her lips, then touching her teeth, etc). This can take a few weeks to get to the end point of actual tooth brushing. Then try to brush her teeth daily. This is the best thing you can do to keep her teeth healthy.

Even if dental disease isn't causing her bad breath, every dog and cat should get their teeth brushed as part of their normal healthcare (like vaccines and regular checkups).

  24. QUESTION:
What are some methods of preventing a teenager from comitting suicide?
I'm a teenager and i'm curious cuz i've been considering it for a long time because i've been and am still going through a long, dark, and painful depression. And i want to know some ways to stop myself from doing it.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi, Christopher.

I know exactly what you're going through, for years I thought about committing suicide, and I needed a lot of help to get out of that. The great thing is, there are MILLIONS of things that can get you out of it, or at least help.

The first thing to do is to think about why you're depressed. What caused it? Did someone you love die, did you get out of a bad relationship? Just sit down and make a list of everything in your life that's bothering you. They don't all have to be serious, you know. Did a girl you like reject you? Did you get a scratch on your cellphone? Is one of your teachers getting on your nerves? Anything like that, just write them all down.

Next, make a list of all the positive, feel good things in your life. Do you have a great girlfriend, good friends? Is your dog's breath smelling better then before? Maybe you found an amazing book or a new favourite song? Anything that seems happy, put it down. Is your birthday coming up soon?

Pick something to look forward to. You know, is your birthday next weekend? When does your school end? Is a family member coming to visit you? Each day, write down the number of days left on your hand and calender, it'll get you excited and you'll have something to look forward to.

Talk to someone. Talk to you're friends, parents, teachers, guidance counseler, prefessional help, a suicide hotline, hell, talk to you're fish if he's willing to listen. Just get it all out. Don't be embarresed, millions of people go through this, everyday, and there is a lot of things doctors can priscribe to help, anti-depressents ETC.

Do Stuff. Get outside and go for a bike ride, exercise, walk the dog. Go out to a party, or to the gym, get in shape, go to your library, meet that online friend and see how far that goes, join a team or a club or anything. Just have fun, getting out of the house will really improve your outlook on things. You'll start forgetting about being so upset. Try getting a job?

Feel Good. Every morning get up and look yourself in the mirror. List ten good things about yourself. I'm good at sports, I have nice hair, I'm going on a date with a pretty girl, I love to swim, I'm a nice person.... Do this every morning and you'll start feeling a lot better.

Why Can't You. List reasons why you can't commit suicide. Maybe your dog will miss you, who will feed the cat? What would happen to your little sister when she gets a boyfriend? What will your parents say? What would your friends do? Just don't do it, okay?

Secondly, look for things that give you hope. Fly to the airport and look at the souldiers returning home who are kissing their wives or something, go to hopeful sites...

      www.givesmehope.com
      www.lovegivesmehope.com

Those really helped me out, they're so happy and sweet. Read through those sites.

Good luck, and remember their are people who care about you, and the sun will come out tommorow, don't give up.

      Sincerely,
      Megan.

Which three would you pick and why?

    • ANSWER:
dogs- they lick their buts and eat barf
elephants- i saw one stick its face in another elephants butt and eat its poop
penguins- they eat fish all day, and we all know how bad fish smell

  26. QUESTION:
How do your stop you dog from having bad, stinky, breaths? (read detail before answering please!)?
I have a Yorkshire Terrier who has a very stinky breath. She smells like fish sometimes. I've been giving mints and other stuff to her but it doesn't help. If you think that it's the food... then it isn't because I have another dog who eats the same food but doesn't have the same problem.

    • ANSWER:
have you checked the teeth? if there is this brown or grey stuff on them this is called tarter, it ios bacterial filled and if let go your dog will devlope peridontal dises which will care bacteria throught the body slowly killing your dog. this is usually the cause of foul breath. take her to the vet get a chekup and maybe get the teeth cleaned by the vet, yes it is like asurgical prcedure the vet will put the dog under and then scrap off the gunk from the teeth and then polish them after this gets done get dental chews and brush your dogs teeth everyday. Toy breeds have more issues with their teeth than any other size dog

  27. QUESTION:
Why does cat breath always smell like fish? Even if they only eat chicken flavored stuff?
My cats always lick me or get up in my face. My one cat also gives kisses on demand like a dog (my vet said she never saw THAT before). But I've noticed that whatever cat it is, and whatever they eat, their breath always has this fishy/seafood odor. I've found this in all cats. What's up with that? (and they do have good dental hygiene)

    • ANSWER:
      Dear Mizuki,
I have bad news for you and I'm afraid you aren't going to like it. The reason your cats' breath always smells like fish has nothing to do with their diet; it has to do with their digestive systems. A cat's digestive system is full of enzymes specially designed for breaking down meat proteins and when they lick their butts, the smell gets in their little mouths. Now stop kissing the little butt munchers and get a proper boyfriend!

  28. QUESTION:
My yorkie has been depressed for about a year and shakes until incontinence frequently, why?
Tonight he urinated on the floor and it was dark pink (and not in celebration of Valentine's Day either...), I am going to take a sample of his urine to the vet tomorrow to rule out kidney disease or UTI. He is about 6 years old with no history of either. He eats Royal Canine's Yorkshire Terrier food (on this diet for over 3 years) so his breath always smells like fish. I was reading that foods high in protein may be bad for dogs with kidney problems, is this food bad? Are there any other explanations?

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like he may have bladder or kidney stones. The color of the urine is because of blood in the urine, and it is good that you are getting him to a vet soon. Usually UTIs do not have a lot of blood in them, but it can happen.

  29. QUESTION:
My cats kidneys are failing and my other cat whose never had a problem with him is now hissing at him. why?
So I got some bad news from the docs today. My cats kidneys are failing, so he will more then likely die soon. His breath smells really bad. When I got back from the vets, my other cat is now hissing and scared to come near him. Just wondering why

    • ANSWER:
Hissing just cause of the smell from the vets
Toatal Kidney failure or crf? There is a huge difference. CRF is very treatable
      Treatment of Chronic Renal Failure

If your cat is not in final stages, this is not want you want to do. You do not want to put your cat on the
Vets low protein diet. There are simply so many better options out there than to hand the poor cat a low amount of poor quality protein - which often results in a poor appetite and muscle wasting since the body is now robbing its own muscle mass to feed itself a decent quality and amount of protein.
. There are new thoughts on this and the thinking is it is not the amount of protein but the quality of protein that matters.
The Merck veterinary manual [www.merckvetmanual.com] says that cats need "4 g of protein of high biologic value per kg body wt/day". That's about 7 calories from protein per pound body weight per day. If a cat isn't a good eater and consumes, say, 20 calories per pound per day, then 7/20 = 35% of calories can safely be from protein. It must be high quality protein, which means meat, milk, and eggs, and not grain or soy.

I am under the assumption that you have been feeding mostly dry foods. Many use a vegetable based protein instead of animal and that is part of the problem.. Your cat needs protein as it is a carnivore and cutting down on it will lead to other health issues and may cause faster degeneration.
You want to cut down on phosphorous (no fish allowed now)

The best way to do this is with a raw diet which you can make yourself or buy. (Making yourself is better) link provided at the bottom
If you are unwilling to do that then something like the non fish flavors of Wellness or Merrick with NO grains are good alternatives. Wysong is also a good canned choice. This list gives a breakdown. Remember you want low phosphorous
      http://www.geocities.com/jmpeerson/CanFoodOld.html

You should be giving sub-Q fluids as needed.

You also will want to look into phosphorous binders. Something like aluminum hydroxide
Ask your vet or look into calcitrol

You may want to talk to the vet about having injectable Pepcid AC on hand or you can buy it in pill form (ac not plain pepcid) and give 1/4 tab for stomach upset which happens a lot in crf cats due to acid in the stomach.

  30. QUESTION:
My dogs breath smells awful, is there any way i can get rid of it?
It doesn't just smell a bit funky, it smells like fish... she doesn't have any tooth problems, i feed her wellness core which is all protein. I think it might be the food because it makes her poop smell very strong and since its all meat and what not. Her butt also smells like fish very strongly. I think it might be her glands but i dont know why her mouth would smell so strongly. shes a bull terrier i know theyre gassy dogs but i dont know maybe the breed is just over all a bit stinkier. when i was making her rice with veggies and turkey her poop didnt smell that bad but her fishy smell still stuck around. i did notice her teeth have a bit of build upbut not badly..but i guess a little is still a lot. any how, i had an american bulldog who ate the same well ness core food with her and he didnt stink at all... so i dont see as to why it would be the food. so if any one knows anything that might help please let me know ;)

it sucks because she likes biting and licking my ears and sometimes i just cant stand her breath and i feel bad like if im rejecting her...

    • ANSWER:
Its possible that the food is to blame if she isn't digesting it well, but its just as possible that the tartar on her teeth or a sinus or nasal infection could be causing the smell. I would take her to the vet and have them take a look at her.

  31. QUESTION:
Why does my Pomeranian`s breath smell really bad?
It smells like fish, and you can smell it when he is on your lap, his teeth are fine, they`re white and healthy looking.
I haven`t gone to the Vet for a long time.
I`ll have to make my mom go first. We`re already late on the shot up dates.

    • ANSWER:
What does your vet have to say? Foul breath can actually be an indicator of other health issues.

ETA: Well then you should have your dog checked out.

  32. QUESTION:
Why does my dogs breath smell like fish?
I have a Chihuahua it just started he's breath has been smelling like fish he keeps licking he's but for some reason I notice that he's teeth are fine his gums are fine he doesn't have any worms has these ever happen to ur dog

    • ANSWER:
If he's licking his rear end, he's probably picking up the smell of his ANAL GLANDS. When these get clogged, which happens quite a lot with tiny dogs, they do emit a fishy smell. Check. If the smell is worse back there, then have your vet manually drain them and see what's going on. If they become impacted, they can often become infected too which means they need treating, with antibiotics. These are scent glands and should express just a small amount of the matter in there, with every normal stool passing. During times of looseness, or other irregular BMs, things go wrong but these glands should never be empty.

Otherwise, I have no idea what's going on - there are dietary issues with bad breath apart of course, to dental problems.

  33. QUESTION:
why does my dogs breath smell fishy ALL THE TIME! ?
he doesnt eat fish and her breath is disgusting, its amazing how she even gets that smell.

any ideas on how her breath is soooooo bad?
she doesnt eat fish and her breath is disgusting, its amazing how she even gets that smell.

any ideas on how her breath is soooooo bad?

    • ANSWER:
If you have a dog whose breath packs a powerful punch, chances are that plaque is the culprit. Plaque is the same bacteria film that covers our teeth if we don't brush for a while. It can also lead to smelly and sometimes dangerous gum infections. With a little bit of care you can help prevent your dog's breath form turning to stinky.

Just think on how your breath would smell is you didn't brush your teeth all week. Yuck. Brushing your pet's teeth as much as you brush yours would be ideal, but twice a week is okay for your dog.

Brushing your dog's teeth may sound like a horrifying event, but if you start brushing their teeth while they are young, your experience will soon turn into a pleasant one. Don't start brushing immediately or you will get a big protest. First start by handling and stroking your dog's mouth. Do this for a few minutes a day and reward them for good behavior. After a few days of handling your dog's mouth, you should begin lifting you dog's lip with a piece of gauze on your finger and begin brushing in circular motions. After a while you should be able to move on to more teeth after they get used to it. After a little longer you can graduate to a soft bristle brush designed for a dog.

They even have toothpastes for dogs. Some are flavored like chicken, beef or a malt. This will make their experience a lot more pleasurable. Don't use human toothpaste as it will foam and dogs can't spit and it will upset their stomachs.

Even after all that practice and your dog still doesn't like having their mouth handled, you can get a toy. There is a hard rubber toy that has grooves in. Vets recommend this particular toy for dogs who don't like having their teeth brushed. It is specially designed for your dog's teeth. You can put a little of your dog toothpaste in the grooves and your dog can brush their own teeth.

There are some people who make oxtail soup. For those very few, you can give your dog the cooked oxtail. The tail's tendons will help massage the teeth and gums. It will help clean those hard to reach places.

If you don't make oxtail soup, try a raw carrot. A little bit of carrot, that you can give as a snack, can act a tooth scraper. It will be pretty mild, but it will help scour away the stinky plaque. There is even dog mouth sprays and they do the same thing for dogs as they do for us.

You can stop giving your dog canned food. When you make the switch to dry food you will help to improve mouth odor. Dry dog food scrapes the surface of the teeth. Also, do not let your dog nibble throughout the day. The harmful bacteria in your dog's mouth are always active. Pick up the dog bowl if your pet doesn't finished within a half an hour. If you only feed your dog a couple of ,times a day then you only feed the bacteria a couple times a day.

  34. QUESTION:
Is there a cat treat that cleans cats teeth?
I have a cat that has bad fishy breath. I know it does not cost that much to go get a cat toothbrush and toothpaste but I know my cat would get upset and stressed if i did so, so i'm wondering if there is some kind of treat made that cleans a cats teeth as I know they make dog treats like "dentastix etc".
It may be from the canned cat food that him and his brother have been eating but i'll just have the vet clean his teeth then when I take him in to get vaccinated then. I also noticed food particles on his teeth when I first smelled the fishy breath so maybe, hopefully it's that. I hope it isn't a medical problem that would be sad since he's only about 20-21 weeks old.
    @ Adopt a shelter cat,
do you take your cats in to the vet to get their teeth cleaned and if so how often do you do have them cleaned?

    • ANSWER:
No because cats tend to swallow food whole.

Stop feeding your cat foods made with fish and get it to the vet for a checkup. Bad breath can be from the food, gum disease, kidney disease or even cancer.

edit: I've never had any of my cats' teeth cleaned and they're all 8-16 years of age. None of them have tartar. Their breath doesn't smell and that's probably because I never feed them anything with fish in it - dry or canned. What do you feed your cat? Mine eat Blue Buffalo Wilderness and canned is a variety of stuff. Highly unlikely a kitten needs its teeth cleaned.

  35. QUESTION:
Why does my dog's breath smell so bad?
I live in a house with two dogs besides mine and since we all moved in with each other the dogs breath has all gotten this awful smell....like a fish died in their mouths' smell. They all have it...what the hell is this?

    • ANSWER:
Correction: wet food does not cause mouth problems. high carbohidrate food causes mouth problems. Think about it this way, when you eat cake and candy how do your teeth feel? they feel gritty right? that is plaque as you know. the bacteria that makes plaque feeds off carbohidrates. the main source of carbs in dog food are sugars (beet pulp, sugar, malassis) and grains (corn, wheat, soy, oats, barley) If you find a food with none of these things than your dog will have perly white theeth and no bad breath. If you can't find a grain free food (Solid Gold, Nature's Variety, Wellness) than try any food with no corn wheat or soy. that will help but it may not completely eleminate the problems. Try merrick or any of the afore mintioned. Also give them plunty of raw (never cooked) beef or pork bones and dried tendons (never raw hide). These will act like a natural tooth brush and scrub away all the left over plaque.

If you are still having a problem after 2 months on the new food than go to your vet and ask for a dentle. They will clean his teeth and gums. Then start using plaqueoff. this is a sea weed that naturally stops plaque from forming.

I know it feels like an uphill batle but it is worth it. I am sure the reason it started when you moved is because he got stressed. when we get stressed it allows bacteria a chance to thrive. Also I bet he is eating your roommate's dog's food. Read the labels and see what the first 5 ingrediants are. You will not be happy when you see it.

      sorry about the spelling

  38. QUESTION:
My dogs breath is really bad?
Just recently my dog (he is a pug) has been having really bad breath. It almost smells like fish. He keeps licking his nose like he has something in his mouth or like he just ate something. Last night it looked like pus coming from his mouth when he was drooling. It might not have been from him though because it was only a tiny bit, but I looked and there arent any abcesses in his mouth and his teeth look fine. I really don't have money to take him to the vet. Its been hot here these past few days so hes been a bit lathergic and he hasnt been eating as much. Could it be keytones like when humans are hungry?
    Any advice is great

    • ANSWER:
Almost certainly he has peridontal disease (infected gums) you cant always see it, because it is below the gum line - if you want your dog to live, he must go to a vet for teeth cleaning and possibly extractions...foul breath is just the tip of the iceberg.

  41. QUESTION:
What do you feed your dog?
I have a puppy and I would like to see what other people feed their dogs.

    • ANSWER:
Home cooked: meats and fish, some carbohydrates like rice and oatmeal, vegetables and fruits. A daily vitamin for insurance, cheese for treats and, on occasion, yogurt.

Dogs have no smell, no bad breath, are lean, very energetic, have white teeth and are not cranky. They do get some junk food once in awhile but then again who doesn't.

This takes more time than dog food and some understanding of proportions but I think that fresh, human quality ingredients are best for them.

  42. QUESTION:
I have an dog breath question?
My dogs breath smells nasty, i was wondering if i could brush her teeth with a tooth brush and use tooth paste. Or should i not to that? Also is there any human food she could eat so it wont stink, cause the stuff at the store that you can buy for dogs dont help..

    • ANSWER:
Go somewhere like Petsmart, they have dog toothbrushes and dog toothpaste. Dont use human toothpaste. Dont feed her human food, it isnt good for her. Check the ingredients of the food you've been feeding her, maybe there is some type of fish in it . . . that usually makes my dogs breath smell worse. Get a good quality , natural dog food at the pet store while you are there picking up the toothpaste. Also, they usually have treats that help with bad breath.

Just really bad. I also started birth control about a week ago. Could that be the problem? I personally think it smells like bad dog breath. Its embarrassing. I constantly wash myself. But it doesn't go away. Is it just like a side affect or something?

Did you also use a condom? You could have caught an STD from the person you had sex with. While there are some changes to your vaginal discharge while on the pill it shouldn't be that bad. I suggest going to the doctor to be tested.

  46. QUESTION:
my yellow lab smells, after you pet him your hand stinks as well. He does not roll in anything. what is it?

all great answers thanks, I bath him once per month. I love the dog, but i have to wash my hands after petting him. It's almost as if it comes from his skin or are labs just smelly?
I think it's an ear infection......one ear reeks while the other doesn't.....some great answers thanks

    • ANSWER:
My dog hardly ever has a bath, I shower the mud off her after a dirty walk, however I don't use shampoo. She is never smelly.

I think that your dog might have a digestive problem. You may be feeding him a food which contains grain. Grain creates acidity in the blood and as a consequence they get skin problems. Google grain free dog food, change to this and stop feeding him biscuits.

Dogs like to munch on a carrot, dried fish squares, a hard boiled egg or dried tripe. Get rid of the grain and you will get rid of the smell.

Until you get his diet sorted out use essential oils. Add a few drops of the following to half a pint of vinegar. Citronella, Tea Tree Oil, Lemon Grass and Lavender . Use this to sponge him down after you have groomed him. As well as making him smell sweet, this will also prevent fleas.

Just another thought. If he has bad teeth, or gum infections he may have smelly breath. If he grooms himself he will be transferring the smell from his mouth onto his coat.

  47. QUESTION:
My Dog(6yr old Jack Russell x) has very bad breath but he dosnt have bad teeth could there be any other cause?
We got him from a rescue when he was 18 months old with no history of health problems
the best way to describe the smell is stale milk and rotten fish !

    • ANSWER:
Dog bad breath is caused by bacteria on the top of the tongue, just like in humans. In humans we clean off the tongue with a tongue cleaner. You can also clean off the top of your dog's tongue with a tongue cleaner OraBrush. I have seen a Vet clean a dog's tongue with OraBrush. Worked great.

  48. QUESTION:
    what causes bad dog breath?
my dog has really bad breath like she ate a dead fish help
i brush its teeth all the time and she has had it for 3 months

    • ANSWER:
Most of us have smelled dog halitosis (bad breath) at one time or another. It is the result of the foul odor-producing bacteria buildup in a dog’s lungs, gut, or mouth. Chronic halitosis in a dog can indicate that it needs better dental care or there is a serious issue in its gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, or liver.

      Dog Breath Causes

The more common serious issues are gum (periodontal) or dental disease, and generally the smaller a dog is, the more vulnerable it is to tartar and plague. There are more serious issues that are possible, but less common, which include more extreme medical problems in the mouth, gastrointestinal tract, organs, or respiratory system.

      Diagnosing Dog Breath

One should normally bring his or her pet to the veterinarian to diagnose the reason behind the chronic bad breath. A vet can do a physical eam and laboratory work to pinpoint the problem. Come prepared with information on your dog’s diet, exercise routine, and behavioral habits.

When Should I Take My Dog To The Vet?

As soon as your dog’s breath has an unusual smell, bring it to the vet. Here are some symptoms:

      1. Unusually fruity/sweet breath can signify diabetes, especially if the dog has been drinking fluids and urinating more than usual.
      2. Dog breath that smells like urine can mean kidney disease.
      3. Bad breath along with vomiting, lack of appetite, and yellow-tinged corneas and/or gums can signify a liver problem.

      Dog Breath Cure

Obviously, treatment depends on the cause of dog breath. If plaque is the cause, the dog may need a professional dental cleaning. If diet is the cause, then you should change what your dog is eating. If the cause of bad breath is related to gastrointestinal, liver, kidney, or lung issues, the vet should know the best route to take.

      Prevent Dog Breath

Just because a dog is older does not mean that it is normal to have bad breath. Always take action and provide the best care that you can for your pet, as a method of prevention. Here are some good things to do:

      1. Bring the dog in for regular checkups at the vet to make sure it has no underlying medical issues.
      2. Have the vet monitor the condition of the dog’s teeth and breath.
      3. Provide the dog with a high-quality and easily digestible diet.
      4. Brush the dog’s teeth everyday if possible–or as frequently as you can if you cannot everyday. Be sure to brush with a toothpaste made for dog’s, since toothpaste for human’s can cause digestive problems in canines.
      5. Provide safe chew toys that encourage the natural process of chewing and teeth cleaning.
      6. Research dog treats that help with breath odor.
      7. Research dog oral health products to use at home and discuss them with your vet.

Keep in mind that products designed to mask bad breath may not fix the cause of it. Also, most of these ideas discussed can also be used for cats.

  49. QUESTION:
I coughed out some nasty green stuff?
So I went two days with barely no food, two hot dogs to be exact. Then today I had three alcoholic drinks before having a meal. I had italian sausage and fish for dinner. I just coughed these two little yellowish things that looked like a cracked bean. The smell was horrible, like the stinkiest breath ever. What was this? Was it like part of my liver of stomach?

    • ANSWER:
No, you can't cough up a piece of your liver or stomach, don't stress about that. What that sounds like though is a respiratory infection, probably in your throat. You don't sound like you are having many symptoms right now, but it would be a good idea to go to a doctor and get some antibiotics so it will go away (and not get worse).

  50. QUESTION:
What do you think of this story so far?
“Leave her alone,” Nate said as he burst into the room. Marci, skinny, blonde and beautiful Marci, was the only person visible in the large, dark room that reeked of terror. Tied to a chair, her hands were behind her and her mouth was taped shut. When she saw Nate, her eyes widened and she tried to speak to him through the restraints.
“Oh yes? And who’s-s-s going to make me? Little Nathan Sawyer?” said a faint, morbid voice coming from the corner of the room. However, Nate was not surprised. He had lived through this part a thousand times and he knew he would live through it a thousand more. A slight chuckle, almost becoming a stereotypical evil laugh, came from the corner on the ceiling. Four red eyes flashed open and then disappeared. Nates breathing got heavier, but he stood where he was. He could feel the warm puffs of breath on the back of his neck, the rancid smell of rottenness flooding his senses.
“Nobody is coming to save you, Mr. Sawyer,” he heard whispered in his ear, no more than a whisper.
Nate noticed a faint crack and immediately knew what was about to happen. A large shadow appeared on the back wall of the perfectly cube shaped room and blocked out the little light there was to begin with. He turned around and heard Marci screaming, her chair rocking back and forth.
Two large claws reached down towards Nate. Frozen with what looked like confidence but was really fear, Nate stood his ground, though his heart was racing. He closed his eyes tight. This part was new to him. He never made it past the part of the dream where Insecurity became the size of Nate’s house. He could feel the claws touching him, their white and red striped spines scraping against his skin. His eyes flew open to the sight of his blue bedroom ceiling. He looked at the clock. It was 4:28 AM.
As with every night, the dream where Marci Foster, the most beautiful and elegant creature to ever walk the face of the universe, and Insecurity, the shape shifting beast that seemed like a mixture of the kind of shrimp you see in fish tanks and some mutant spider, was just that. A dream. A recurring one, at that. Every single night Nate had this dream. The first few times he dreaded going to sleep and avoided it by staying up all night. But he was so tired the next in math that he got an B on a quiz. He then realized he had to go to sleep whether he wanted to or not.
Insecurity always found ways to bring out the worst in him. When you take a look at Nathan Burt Sawyer, you saw a young man with average features, dark brown curly hair, glasses, and gloves on his hands. He was always wearing those gloves because he was in a wheelchair.
Nate looked out his bedroom window with a longing in his eyes. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining bright and there was not a cloud in the sky. The ground was damp from last night’s rain and there were a few twigs on the ground, but that was nothing out of the ordinary. It had been raining for weeks. A man with a large dog that had floppy ears and black and white patches came walking down the street. Nate laid there in bed and wondered what that man was feeling. He could hardly remember anything that happened to him before he was six years old, including what it felt like to walk. What it felt like to have feeling anywhere past your thighs. What it felt like to be normal. Nate sighed and scooted over to the side of the bed where his wheelchair sat waiting for him.

So, what do you think so far? This is part of the first chapter.
Here is the basic idea: Nate, Marci, and a boy named Oscar who is a bully, most notably towards Nate, travel back in time (reason currently undecided) and are stuck there searching for a way back to their era. Throughout the story, you learn that all three of them have insecurities about themselves and because of this accident, they grow to be better people.
If you could tell me if this sounds like a book you might read, that'd be great. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
I really like this, especially the amount of detail you put into this part. I have one suggestion though and that's to show and not tell.

What I mean by that is you might be assuming that the reader won't exactly pick up on the message you're trying to convey. The way to fix this is to write the story, re-read it from a 3rd person perspective and then see if you understand it yourself. If a stranger can understand your meaning then you're set and you don't need to write the meaning within the story itself.

I had a problem with doing that in my book but after several edits, I managed to fix it.

      I hope this helped!

      Best wishes,
      ~Payam
