Stink Breath Dogs

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What can you feed a dog if their breath stinks?
My dogs breath stinks. Is there something I can feed them? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
There are many things you can feed him to mask his bad breath. Just a caution though. Often, when a dog has bad breath, it is from gum disease or tooth decay...or both.

See a Vet first. Unlike people, your dog can't get false teeth...so help protect the ones they have!

  2. QUESTION:
Is there anything to reduce a dogs bad breath like mouth wash and dog tooth pace?
I hate it when my dogs breath stinks and she licks me.I love to be licked but not with a stinky breath.

    • ANSWER:
i give my dog greenie bones. you can get them usually at any pet store

  3. QUESTION:
What is a good method to keep my dogs breath from stinking?
No matter what I try, it is always bad. Is there a breath freshener for dogs that is safe? (I have two Chocolate Labs)
What kind of toothbrush? There are a variety out there. Any recommendations?

    • ANSWER:
DO NOT GIVE A DOG A HUMAN BREATH MINTs AND DEFINATELY DON'T PUT MOUTHWASH IN IT'S WATER. WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE TRYING TO DO, POISON IT????! Both of those have either ethyl alcohol or harsh chemicals.

There are a number of ways that actually work. Dogs' teeth, just like people, need to be brushed regularly or they will smell. If you brush them with just a little toothpaste and they still stink, the dog might have gum disease and will need to go to the vet for a cleaning. Pet supply stores (Petco, Petsmart) sell any number of breath mints specifically for dogs, but those only cover up the smell, not the cause. Get the dog a chew toy designed to fight plaque and for treats, don't give it chewie, beefy things, give it hard biscuits or Greenies.

  4. QUESTION:
What are the chances of a dog having all 42 teeth pulled out during teeth cleaning?
My dog's breath stinks but when i see her teeth they arent that bad. What are the chances of all of her teeth getting pulled? Man that would cost a lot.

    • ANSWER:
i don't think that all of your dogs teeth would get pulled for bad breath. give your dog a greenie (it is a treat that is supposed to give them good breath)

  5. QUESTION:
What do you find works best for a dog breath controlling treat?
My Dog's breath STINKS. I cannot emphasis enough how gross it gets from time to time. I know this is a common problem, and have bought many types of dogs treats that help freshen her breath. None of them seem to be working, so what do you find works best for your pooch?

    • ANSWER:
Have you taken your dog to the vet and had his teeth examined and cleaned? Bad doggie breath is a sign of dental disease. No treat will fix that. All dogs need regular dental care from a vet.

  6. QUESTION:
Please do not tell me that my dogs bad breath is due to his teeth?
I am looking for any reason except tarter build up as to why my dogs breath stinks so bad...brush them, give tarter treats, vet says tarter and teeth look good. It is not his teeth and his breath is horrific. Please help. Please, Please, Please do not respond with anything about teeth, I am looking for any other reason that people my know of. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
For chronic bad breath charcoal can help. It is available in tablet, biscuit or powder form. Also adding digestive enzymes to the diet can help. Selected foods available from your vet which aid digestion and reduce odours will also help.
      Good luck!

  7. QUESTION:
Can you brush a dogs teeth with toothpaste for people?
My dogs breath really stinks and i was wondering,if i could brush his teeth with my toothpaste. I dont want to have to buy special toothpaste if i dont have to .

    • ANSWER:
first take your dog to the vet for an oral exam. there might be a broken or abcessed tooth that is causing the odor. dog's need regular dental cleanings just as humans do. it's been shown that around 80% of all dogs over the age of 3 years old have some sort of periodontal disease. the bacteria if left untreated can get into the blood stream and can cause kidney, liver and heart damage. the treatment for this will far be more costly than a simple dental cleaning procedure. human toothpaste is just as it says, "human" toothpaste. would you brush your teeth with dog toothpaste? the ingrediants in human brands of toothpaste can be toxic to a dog over time. after the dental cleaning your vet can better instruct you on how to care for your dog's teeth until the dog is due for the next dental cleaning. this is all part of the expense of being a responsible pet owner.

  8. QUESTION:
My dog stinks and I need help to figure out why?
I just got a westie type dog and took him to the vet and he checked out fine and got shots. The vet said he was 3 months old. The dog stinks!! The more you bathe him the worse the smell is. He doesnt look like he has a skin problem, ears look okay, teeth are good and the smell isnt from breath. The dog is happy and playful but I can smell him from across the room. It's a musty rotten smell. Any advice?

    • ANSWER:

  9. QUESTION:
Does the pet food frolic make your dogs breath stink?
Not been reading great things about it anyway by does frolic make your dogs breath stink really really bad?

    • ANSWER:
It's entirely possible. Does eating garlic or onions make your breath stink? Some foods can, of course. But if you're having a problem with a stinky mouth, it's likely that there are dental issues that need to be resolved more than just a food problem. Your dog may need to have his teeth cleaned by your vet, so ask about that the next time you bring him or her in. :)

  10. QUESTION:
What is the best way to clean my dogs teeth?
My dog's breath always stinks, even before he eats. He is a Golden Retriever that is 4 years old? How can I make his breath not stink? What are good products to use? Please HELP!

    • ANSWER:
      buy dental sticks

  11. QUESTION:
Brushing a dogs teeth and leaving the food down?
Is it okay to brush your dog's teeth with human toothpaste. I live in Thailand and i doubt very much if they have animal toothpaste. My dog's breath sometimes stinks and i want to make sure she keeps her teeth as long as possible, but she doesn't like it.

Also i've read that you shouldn't leave food down. In the morning i put some biscuits down and sometimes she just nibbles at them through the day before i give her a meaty dinner. Is it wrong to do this?

    • ANSWER:
It's not WRONG exactly, it's just not adivsable to leave the food down because the dog can get obese from eating too much during the day, and it's just best to give her a breakfast and take it away after she leaves it. It's up to you, but it is advisable to give the dogs meals instead of allowing free feedings.

There are a lot of chemicals in human toothpaste... it really isn't a good idea to brush their teeth with it. Dogs do not spit and will swallow the toothpaste. You can go online and order doggy toothpaste from one of several websites, google "dog toothpaste" and there must be one of those that can ship the product to where you are.

In the meantime, you can brush her teeth with just water, its important to get her used to that practice, even if there isn't toothpaste on the brush.

  12. QUESTION:
How do I stop my dog from eating cat poop?
That sounds funny, I'm sure, but my dog--he's 1 1/2 yrs--digs in the cat litter box with his face. It's so gross. It makes his breath stink, and it scatters the litter on the floor. We've tried moving the litter box to a very inconspicuous place, but he gets it whenever he has a chance. The thing is, he knows it's bad. When he comes out of the room after doing it, he sneaks around with his tail tucked ... Any training/discipline suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Ask your vet about Forbid. It's a powder made specifically for ure problem. Basically you sprinkle it in the cat's food, and it makes the cat's poop real nasty (as if it isn't already eh?). Anwyays if your clinic has it they can give you the details and let you know how to use it and when it becomes effecting ect ect. Again its called Forbid.

  13. QUESTION:
How do i get rid of garlic breath? Apart from the obvious toothpasting and mouthwashing?
I love eating raw garlic, but it makes my breath stink. Brushing my teeth doesn't really seem to work! I don't want to give up the garlic!

    • ANSWER:
Italians have faced this problem for centuries! What they do is chew on a coffee bean after eating a meal containing lots of garlic. It works like a charm.

There are properties in coffee which combat odors. Think about this: drug smugglers pour ground coffee in boxes which contain their drug packages in order to throw the drug sniffing dogs off track.

  14. QUESTION:
What is safe to brush my dogs teeth with?
What is safe to brush my dogs teeth with? Her breath really stinks and I can barley stand it. Anybody know what I could use. I didn't know if baking soda or w.e would be safe so I didn't use it. Any ideas?
Thanks for the nice answers. The vet said she has very clean and nice teeth, and I just wanted to keep them clean. I was wondering what I could use from around the house that would be safe right now. I will probably buy the dog toothpaste next time I go to the store. Amanda K you do not need to act like a know it all, you sound very immature and ignorant. If you don't want to answer question then get off YAHOO ANSWERS! Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
You can get doggy toothpastes that taste like meat and can be safely swallowed or you can even use with a wash cloth on your finger if you are just starting out.

If the smell is very bad though it could be something more than a brushing can fix. She could have an infected tooth or something else going on in there.

It could also come from a disorder, disease or even from the food you are feeding.

  15. QUESTION:
How do you remedy a dogs nose that is always blocked with dry mucous and when cleared is still very hard to br?
i keep his nose cleaned out (what i can get to). i have treat using vapor rubs to kinda loosen it up in hope that it'll run out but even when it looks cleared out he still sounds stuffed up ? also his breath stinks bad to what could that be and how do i fix it ?

    • ANSWER:
Taking the dog to the vet would be a good idea. The problem could be a number of conditions from an upper respiratory problem, sinus infection, bad teeth, etc. All conditions need medical treatment that only the vet. can do. If your dog hasn't had all it's shots Distemper will present it self with a snotty nose to start. There is nothing either way that you can do or anyone here.

  16. QUESTION:
How do i make my dogs breath smell better? It stinks, she has no teeth ?
She is completely toothless, i took her in about a month ago. My friend found her on the street and when i first took her to the vet her breath didn't smell like it does now.

    • ANSWER:
Brush your dog's teeth with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) since it will neutralizer the bad breath (or any odor, for that matter) and is harmless in small amounts.

Since it doesn't have teeth, maybe you can dab it on its tongue?

  17. QUESTION:
My dog keeps throwing up and her breath stinks?
My chiweinie is a parvovirus surviver and I'm worried she has side affects from it. I just lost my job so I can't take her to the vet but she has weird noises coming from her belly and her breath sticks really bad. She throws up often and eats grass. Does anyone have any remedies or suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
First of all, don't let her eat grass. Grass makes a dog throw up. He breath is probably bad from throwing up so much. I would make her some white rice and boil some hamburger meat and grind the hamburger meat in between your hands to make very small pieces. Mix the two. 2/3 rice and 1/3 meat. That is a good bland meal that my vet recomended to me when my dog was sick. It will fill her tummy and get her use to having food in it again and it will be very bland so it shouldn't make her throw up. Don't give her a lot. Just give her about 1/2 cup and see how she does. You boil the hamburger because boiling removes the fat. Do not let her eat any more grass or the vomiting will not stop. Make sure that she is drinking lots of water. You can feed her the hamburger mixture for up to 3 days but, after that, she needs to go back on dog food as the rice and hamburger have almost no nutritional value. It's just designed to calm her tummy and get it use to being full again.

  18. QUESTION:
what is a cheap and effective way to make your dog's breath better?
my dog's breath stinks. is there any way to safely make it smell better without having to buy special products?

    • ANSWER:
There is NO need to brush your dog's teeth - Nature's toothbrush is much more effective. Your dog's breath probably stinks because of inappropriate diet - one containing grains, cooked proteins, and in biscuit or tinned form. This diet gives NO teeth and gum cleaning benefits and is not digestible by your pet carnivore. These two factors are most likely the cause of the stinky breath (and smelly coat and huge stinky poo).

By feeding a raw or prey model diet based around raw meaty bones not only will your dog be eating what he is designed to by nature, his teeth will be cleaned with every meal. The meat flosses between the teeth and massages gums, the enzymes in the meat inhibit bacterial growth, and the bones scrape plaque and tartar off the teeth. Raw fed dogs fed on a RMB or 'frankenprey' diet of meat, meaty bones and offal have sparkly white teeth, fresh breath, no doggy smell and smaller, less smelly stools.

  21. QUESTION:
how do i get rid of my dogs horrible breath?
yeah my dog has horrible breath! i love my dog to death but everytime she opens her mouth it smells horriblee! i have tried brushing her teeth but that doesnt work. yeah, help?

    • ANSWER:
About the toothbrushing -- how long ago did you start and did you keep it up every day? If not, well, imagine how your breath would smell if you brushed only occasionally. Eeeew!

If you're brushing every day with a toothpaste designed for dogs (human toothpaste isn't good for them) and her breath still stinks, look at her teeth. Are they yellow, discolored? If so, there's plaque built up and she needs to see the vet for a tooth cleaning. Just like humans, even dogs who get their teeth brushed still need the occasional cleaning to remove buildup.

You can also look at her diet. If she's getting "junk food," she won't be as healthy and one of the symptoms can be bad breath (gas being another).

If the vet's checked her teeth and her diet's okay, look at additives. There's one available, for example, made from beets, a liquid you add to the dog's water to help. Also "carrot bones." We give our dogs fresh, crunchy carrots (wash first) to chew and they like them.

  22. QUESTION:
My dog licks herself way too much and it makes her breath smell horrible, what can I do?
She doesn't harm herself but it really makes her breath stink. Is there something I can do to get her to stop?

    • ANSWER:
at least she's clean. try giving her breath mints for dogs.

  23. QUESTION:
Is it normal for a dogs breath to stink when they lose teeth?
Her breath really smells.. like old fish. Its not THAT bad, but i can definitely smell it when she opens her mouth, breathes on me, or licks me, it's not totally bothersome, but definitely not enjoyable either. I can only imagine that it smells so bad because she has been losing a lot of her teeth lately. Can losing her baby teeth cause this problem or should i take her to the vet?

    • ANSWER:
Yes that the smell of old blood.
you can try drops to freshen her breath you can either get ones you drop directly on her tongue or some you can drop in the water bowl
      both are completely natural ingredients.
since she's loosing her teeth brushing them may not be a great option. but you can buy a dog toothbrush kit and do that every couple days.
she's a puppy loosing her baby teeth and it's bleeding which she's probably swallowing. Totally normal.

  25. QUESTION:
how can i get rid of my dogs really bad wind problem?
i have a 13yr old lurcher and he has the baddest wind ever, and they stink............BAD. anyone have any sudgestions on how to freshen him up as i think airfreshener inserted where the sun dont shine is a bit extreme......... and probably a bit cruel.

    • ANSWER:
For starters, you need to either visit the vet or a groomer & have the anal glands emptied. Odds are, they may be 'adding' to the problem. Next, bathe the dog.

Finally, re-evaluate the diet you feed your dog. Foods esp high in carbohydrates (grains) break down as sugars and can cause gas, as dogs really aren't designed to digest grains or sugars. Digestion can slow & become less efficient as they age. Do plan to add an all-purpose digestive enzyme tot eh diet (see GNC store) & add 1-2 tbsp of Stonyfield organic PLAIN, no-fat yogurt (for probiotics). Both things will help the dog digest what it eats better, esp if you improve the diet.

Certain vegetables like broccoli & cauliflower can also be hard to digest & cause gas (I have no idea if you're adding those or they are in your dog food). Most elderly dogs end up on a high-fiber senior diet, which may actually also cause problems. (Most fiber isn't digestible.) I find that most dogs over age 12 yr. have worn-out nubs for teeth & do better on canned food & formerly frozen chopped leafy green veggies. Veggies do give fiber, in a form they would consume (from a wild prey diet model) and if quickly microwaved for 2-3 min will retain much nutritional value, but will be very digestible. Veggies can act as a filler, if your dog shouldn't eat as much canned (somewhat richer) food, to maintain a proper weight.

Be sure to brush/scale your dog's remainign teeth, to prevent decay 7 bad breath.

  26. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of my boxer dogs bad breath?
My boxer dog has started to get really bad (fishy) breath and I do brush his teeth and I even got him dog breath spray, is there anything else I can do ? Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
When a dog starts getting smelly breath then it is no good just covering it up with sprays etc, but you need to find out the cause.

It could be coming from his teeth / gums, and could have infection there. If he does and this is allowed to go on then they can get infection setting up in the jaw bone, and that gets very expensive to treat as they can need ongoing antibiotics for years.

The other thing a bad breath can be is the start of kidney failure as the urea in the system causes the breath to really stink. I mean you can smell it from 6 ft away.

It can also be as simple as his diet not agreeing with him. I don't like to push the raw diet onto people, but quite honestly, you never get a bad breath from raw fed dogs unless there is a tooth / internal problem.

So before you just try to mask it then find out what is causing it.

  27. QUESTION:
Is the brand of dog food to rich for my dog?
At first I had him on kibbles and bits then I slowly switched him to gravy train but with both foods, his poo is still a yellowish color and soft texture. Also, with both foods his breath stinks bad. Any suggestions?
I'm tottally against canned dog food unless its for weight gain, and I do brush his teeth. 1/3 baking soda 2/3 water. The vet told me that.

    • ANSWER:
You're feeding him junk. That's why! You need to get a decently quality dog food for him. You can look on www.dogfoodanalysis.com to to find some good ones or just look at the ingredients, anything with corn or wheat in it is crap, and you don't want anything that has by-products in it, you want a meat in the first two ingredients at least, and look fo something with a decent span of fruits and veggies. A decent food will also help his breath and prevent plaque.

  28. QUESTION:
how do i stop my dog from eating chicken poo?
the title is pretty much self explanatory. we have free range chickens so poo is all over the yard. for some reason both of my dogs like to eat the chicken poo. i'd really like to get rid of this problem because their breath stinks and its just nasty...if anyone has any tips or advice i'd really appreciate it.

  29. QUESTION:
How can I tell my friend that she smells and that she should practice better hygiene?
My one friend always smells like wet dog or fish. Her teeth are bad and her breath stinks. My other friend never washes her hands after she pees. I want to tell them something, but I don't know how to do so in a polite manner. Any advice <:0

    • ANSWER:
Just buy them for their birthdays stuff like fruity shampoo, body wash and soap along with the usual presents! Don't tell them about their hygiene as you may lose them asd friends because saying that even in a nice way could hurt their feelings! Alternatively if other people have noticed their hygiene problems say that they said they smell etc and they will start to wash more as they will kno ppl think they smell

  30. QUESTION:
What is an easy way to brush my dog's teeth?
My dog won't let me brush his teeth, I bought dog tooth paste and a brush. He is scared of it. Help his breath stinks!

    • ANSWER:
I had exactly the same problem with my dog, she is a lil dog scared of everything... paranoia is an understatement...

OK firstly get ur dog to like the actual toothpaste. I did this with my dog for a whole week just letting her lick the paste off my hand.

then i progressed onto putting the paste onto the brush and letting her lick that...yet again another few days lapsed.

Then i began putting the brush into her mouth with the paste on it and getting her to eat the paste with the brush inside her mouth.

3 weeks later (and tons of patience) i can now gently brush her teeth.... but i built up gradually from brushing a few teeth to eventually brushing all her gnashers.

Patience is a huge virtue with dogs.. hope this helps

  31. QUESTION:
what human toothpaste can i use on my dachshund?
she is a 2 year old dog, and her breath STINKS. people have said there are certain types of human toothpaste i can use on her-which ones are these?

    • ANSWER:
None, you need to get a dog toothpaste at a pet store or online.

By the way, your dachshund probably desperately needs a dental - schedule one at your vet's.
That is the reason her breath is bad, her teeth have tartar or, worse, are infected.
This is very common in dachsies because of the shape of their jaws.

Get her some CET chews too, after the dental, they have an enzyme that keeps tartar from building up so much. I assume she is on a good dry kibble like Canidae - wet food causes tartar buildup and tooth decay.

Please get that dental for her, I have seen dachsies teeth rotted so badly that the infection spreads to their jaws and literally eats holes through it, horrible, and makes the dogs sicker and sicker.

  32. QUESTION:

  34. QUESTION:
How can I make my dogs mouth not stink?
He is a Yorkie and his mouth stinks HORRIBLE! Any tips.
Well first of all I tried brushing his teeth and he's scared of the toothbrush and I really don't want to dollars for the vet to brush his teeth.

    • ANSWER:
Has he been thoroughly examined by a vet recently? A healthy dog shouldn't have such a stinky mouth. He may very well gingivitis, tooth decay or other dental problems. It can develop as early as two years if you haven't been providing proper dental care.

Have you been taking him to the vet to annual dental cleanings? Like humans, dogs and cats need some attention from a dentist to thoroughly clean their teeth.

Start maintaining his teeth. Check them weekly for signs of unhealthy gums or cavities, and while you're at it, brush them! You can purchase a toothbrush and toothpaste for your dog at a pet store like PetSmart or PETCO. (Make sure you do not use human toothpaste. It isn't safe for dogs.)

Start adding a mouthwash-like liquid to his drinking water. You can buy a bottle at a regular pet store. It helps fight tartar and keep the breath fresh.

Make sure he always has fresh, clean water.

Make sure he's eating a high-quality diet. If he's on soft food, get him on a hard kibble. Soft/wet food is terrible for teeth. Low-quality brands like Science Diet, Iams, Pedigree, Purina and Eukanuba are often behind stinky dogs, too.

Give him plenty of good toys! For instance, give him bones like Nylabones to help clean his teeth. Give him a "flossy" rope toy. Give him some rubber toys with ridges and bumps to help scrape the teeth clean.

Make sure he isn't eating anything nasty. Obviously, if he's snacking on poop or something, his breath is going to be rancid.

Finally, make sure you purchase from a very high-quality breeder next time. Yorkies are prone to serious dental problems, so it's important to support a breeder who only breeds their healthiest, truest stock.

EDIT: You really can't hold down a seven-pound Yorkie long enough to brush his teeth? Anyway, I hope you introduced him to the toothbrush properly. You can't just stick something in a dog's mouth and expect him to be fine with it.

      http://www.placervillevet.com/dog%20toothbrushing.htm
Dental hygiene is a simple fact of pet ownership. You should have considered all necessary costs before obtaining a dog. He needs regular dental maintenance, and that's that.

  36. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of my dogs bad breath?
He' a rescue dog and was not cared for properly and when he eats, although I feed him a certain type of dog food only, no table food, his breath will stink.

    • ANSWER:
Does your dog have bad breath? Well, maybe you are not employing the use of proper oral hygiene. After all, us humans need to maintain a level of oral care so that we don’t have halitosis. Also, just like people, dogs and cats can get gum disease–and if a dog or cat’s gums are infected and abscessed, bacteria can enter the bloodstream, causing liver, kidney, and even heart malfunctions. So, what’s a good way to brush your best friend’s teeth?

Here are some tips for brushing your pet’s teeth:

#1 Start off slowly. Make sure to use a toothpaste formula that is specifically made for animals, since human toothpaste can give stomach upsets to animals. Have your pet lick the paste off of your finger, and you might need to try a few different flavors to find one that your pet likes.

#2 Once you can get toothpaste into the animal’s mouth, use a slight amount on your finger and run it across the dog or cat’s teeth. This might even take several days to get your pet to do this agreeably. Once your pet is fine with you doing this to its teeth, use a toothbrush (made for pets) and make small circles on the gum line. Don’t brush too hard!

#3 Be sure to cheer on your pet and express approval during this process. Afterward, you could also give your pet a treat, playtime, a walk, etc., so it will think of brushing as a positive moment.

#4 In order to practice proper oral hygiene with your pet, try to brush your pet’s teeth every day.

Here are some warning signs to look for in your pet’s mouth:

-Yellow or brown tartar, especially where the teeth and gums meet
-Red, swollen, bleeding, inflamed, tender, and/or receding gums
      -Chronic halitosis
      -Teeth that are chipped/broken
-Tooth resorption (especially common in cats)- a very painful condition in which the tooth dissolves
-A change in the animal’s diet, chewing habits and appetite can signify depression (along with pawing at the face/mouth).

Also, don’t forget to try this oral rinse for dogs and cats that helps prevent plaque and tartar buildup. Be sure to practice good oral hygiene with your pet, so that the both of you can have great smiles!

i have two dogs and one of them chocked and now his breath stinks really bad.

    • ANSWER:
      Chocks?

DO you mean "choked"? Like he had an airway obstruction internally or was choked by a chain, lampcord, or collar?

I can't imagine what choking would have to do with bad breath unless the dog just now choked.

If his breath is noticably worse, then he needs to see a vet.

They also sell chicken flavored toothpaste @ the vet.Doggie biscuits after eating helps clean the teeth. Please take the dog to the vet (find a vet that you can trust) for a complete exam so that you know what you are dealing with if anything.

  41. QUESTION:
What can I do to make my dog have more pleasant breath?
He's a good dog, but his breath is pretty nasty. Are there any good products out there, which may alleviate this problem?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Change his diet. Dogs that eat commercial dog food can't clean their teeth. The food sticks to their teeth and cause tartar. Tartar stinks and it causes rotten teeth, which often stink, too.

I'm in favor of dropping commercial dog food altogether and switching to a dog's natural diet: raw meat, organs and bones. A dog is fed 2-3% of the ideal body weight each day. A puppy gets 2-3% of the ideal anticipated adult weight each day, divided into 4 meals.

I feed raw/prey model; my 50-pound shar-pei mix gets about 12oz a day, but when I have a gorge meal for her, like a turkey carcass that will take her 4-5 hours to eat, she won't be hungry or interested in food for 2-3 days.

The ideal diet should consist of approximately 80% raw meat, 10% raw edible bone, 5% raw liver, 5% other raw organs, the occasional egg, shell and all, raw.

NO veggies, NO fruit. Dogs cannot digest vegetables or fruits; they lack the enzyme necessary to break down cellulose.

NO grains; again, dogs can't digest cellulose, and the other ingredients are the primary cause of allergies and diabetes in dogs.

NO dairy; dogs are lactose intolerant: another digestive enzyme they don't have.

NO supplements other than a spoonful of deepsea fish body oil for the Omega-3 that corn-finished meat does not contain.

Dogs that eat big chunks of meat with bone in it have cleaner teeth because the food itself doesn't stick to their teeth and the bones scrape against the teeth, polishing them.

  42. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:

  43. QUESTION:
I rescued a dog and its breath smells like an opened grave what can I do?
I brushed his teeth and gave him a mint to eat but every time the lil' feller yawns it stinks up the room.

    • ANSWER:
Take him to the vet first to get his teeth checked out for cavities/decay and possibly cleaned, and also to rule out any health problems, as some can cause bad breath (diabetes and kidney disease can cause animals to have bad breath, as do many other diseases).
If he's got a clean bill of health, you should probably try swapping his food (include some garlic-I know it gives people bad breath, but it can keep dog's breath smelling fresher and it's good for them all around), giving him some doggy anti-bad breath treats such as Greenies, and by starting a routine to keep his teeth brushed.
Best wishes, and I hope his breath becomes bearable soon!

  44. QUESTION:
Why do dogs like to eat cat poo or even their own poo?
As you can imagine their breath stinks after they have done this, so beware when mans best friend is going to give you a big kiss on your face!!!!!!!!!!

    • ANSWER:
Coprophagia is a behavior sometimes observed by dog owners. Hofmeister, Cumming, and Dhein (2001) wrote that this behavior in dogs has not been well-researched, and are currently preparing a study. In a preliminary paper, they write that there are various theories for this, although none have been proven:

      * To get attention from their owners.
      * From anxiety, stress, or having been punished for bad behaviors.
      * They had been punished for having pooped in the past, and attempt to clean up out of fear to be punished again.
      * From boredom.
      * In an attempt to clean up in crowded conditions.
      * When dogs observe their owners picking up feces, and imitate this behavior (allelomimetic behavior). This is highly improbable because the behaviour has also been observed in environments where owners never picked up the dog's (or other) feces.
      * Because puppies taste everything and discover that feces are edible and, perhaps, tasty, especially when fed a high fat content diet.
      * Because dogs are, by nature, scavengers, and this is within the range of scavenger behavior.
      * To prevent the scent from attracting predators, especially mother dogs eating their offspring's feces.
      * Because the texture and temperature of fresh feces approximates that of regurgitated food, which is how canine mothers in the wild would provide solid food.
      * Because of the protein content of the feces (particularly cat feces), or over-feeding, leading to large concentrations of undigested matter in the feces.
      * Due to assorted health problems, including:
      o Pancreatitis
      o Intestinal infections
      o Food allergies, creating mal-absorption
      * Because they are hungry, such as when eating routines are changed, food is withheld, or nutrients are not properly absorbed.
      * Carnivores may sometimes eat or roll in the feces of their prey to ingest and exude scents which camouflage their own.

Some vets recommend putting meat tenderizer in dogfood, since this makes the feces taste excessively bad to dogs. Several companies produce food additives that can also be added to the animal's food to make feces taste bad.

Due to the attraction of dogs to their feces, a popular Chinese idiom goes "A dog cannot change its habit of eating feces", which usually refers to a habit that is hard to correct

  45. QUESTION:
how do i get rid of my dogs bad breath?
he is a 3 year old toy poodle and his breath always stinks, i bought him some dog breath mints but they actually made it worse! i don't want to have to spent a lot of money so does anyone have anything that i could just feed him that i won't have to buy at the pet shop... i can't buy dog toothpaste here so could i just use normal stuff would that make it better? btw he only eats his dog food no table scraps.

    • ANSWER:
Bad breath is usually a sign of periodontal disease. Your dog will need a proper dental scaling and inspection if you want to truly fix this problem. Your dog may also be in pain because of the poor condition of his mouth. Brushing your dog's teeth at this point will not be able to clean the teeth properly because there already is a build up of plaque and calculus, they need to be scaled by a professional before brushing will be able to do anything. Periodontal disease can easily lead to liver and kidney disease later in life. It would be best to see a vet as soon as you can afford it to prevent these conditions from happening.

  46. QUESTION:
How do you stop dog smell?
My little pup stinks, is there a way i can get rid off it because he's clean
He had a bath last week and he's only 4 months old. I have been told not to wash him again.

    • ANSWER:
When a dog begins to emit doggy odor, closely inspect the dog from head to tail. Check the ears for debris, red skin, and odor. If an ear infection is present, it could be the result of the dog's ears not being properly ventilated. Ear infections are common in dogs with ears that are floppy or folded over. If the dog's ears are not properly ventilated, the inside becomes moist and warm, and infection can easily result. If an infection is present, take the dog to a vet. Never use Q-tips on your dog's ears.

Look in the dog's mouth for plaque buildup on the teeth, and for discolored or missing teeth. In addition to the well-known "dog breath," additional odor may be coming from the dog's mouth as a result of food buildup and poor oral hygiene. Feed the dog special plaque fighting dog biscuits daily. Get the dog's teeth cleaned as needed by your vet.

Check the dog's feet; there may be a cut or infection on the dog's foot pads. This type of injury should be immediately cleaned and bandaged. Run your fingers through the dog's coat, and make sure you inspect all sides of the coat. There may be a concealed skin injury underneath the fur. Also, check for an oily or greasy texture on the coat. The coat might be producing dandruff or the skin may be flaky. Injuries should be seen by a vet. One of the most prominent areas for odor generation is the dog's backside. There could be anal infection, a buildup of feces on the dog's coat, or the dog might be constipated or have diarrhea, both of which will produce significant odor. You can carefully trim the dog's backside with scissors to remove feces. A vet should treat an anal infection or impacted anal glands.

If your dog is exhibiting odor and may have an infection or illness, take measures to protect it. Make a dog-care schedule for your dog. Also, take the dog to a vet for a checkup.

Brushing dogs on a daily basis helps to reduce smell, remove excess fur, and stimulate new hair growth. Dogs need to be kept clean, but caution must be taken not to give too many baths. If the dog is bathed every week, the coat is deprived of natural oils. As a result, over- bathing can increase odor. A dog should be bathed once a month using warm water, dog shampoo, a washcloth, and towels.

Part of maintaining a clean home includes washing animal bedding, play toys, and the dog's collar. After washing bedding, make sure that the bedding is completely dry before allowing the dog to sleep on it. If the bedding has been removed from the dryer or brought in from a clothes line, vacuum the bedding with a small hand vacuum; this will remove any debris that was left by the dryer.

    • ANSWER:
Sometimes they stink if they are eating cheap food. So the answer is to feed them something higher quality - meaning if you can get it in a supermarket, it is not high quality.

Sometimes they stink because there is yuck in their mouth. You can try brushing his teeth.

Sometimes they stink because there is yuck in their fur. Give him a good bath with antibacterial soap (and NOT Hartz).

Sometimes they stink out of their ears. Take a washcloth and wipe the inside of his ears with it.

  48. QUESTION:
What kind of tooth paste should i use for my doggy?
my dogs are black lab and a German Shepard, and their breath stinks bad and their teeth have some yellow coloring please help.

    • ANSWER:
Have their teeth cleaned by your vet. Then keep them clean. You can use any dog toothpaste sold at Petsmart or Petco if you brush their teeth daily. Some people like to use PetzLife gel. My dogs hated the taste. There is also concern about the safety of some of the ingredients. I prefer PlaqClnz. Feeding raw meaty bones twice a week works and your dogs will love it.
