What Can I Do About My Dogs Bad Breath

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
how do I get rid of dogs bad breath?
I have a great dog but it has horrible bad breath. I've tried milk bones, brushing its teeth and other treats that say will clean dogs bad breath. any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
When I had bad breath my owner tried milk bones, I loved them but it didn't work. Then he switched my dog food to a lamb and rice formula. It seemed to help. The little poodle next door seems to agree.

  2. QUESTION:
what can i do for my dogs bad breath at home?
My dog has the worst breath what can I do to help it get better with home remedies?

    • ANSWER:
Well, you need to find out what is causing it first. There are diseases that can cause bad breath that need vet treatment, it could also be dental disease, like an abscessed tooth, that would also require vet attention. Make sure you rule out medical reasons first. If its given the all clear from your vet, the folllowing could help:
      1. A better quality food. If your dog food has corn, wheat, soy, byproducts, or meat and bone meal, try a better quality food. This it a good site, take a look at the 5 and 6 star foods and give one of those a try: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
      2. Raw meaty bones. They're cheap, get them from any local butcher. Beef knuckle bones and marrow bones are good, make sure they still have meat clinging to them. Tearing the meat and connective tissue from the bone will clean between and around their teeth. Keep frozen until you are ready to use them. I give mine a raw bone once a week. Don't use cooked bones, they won't get any of the benefits, and they can splinter. I have heard of people using raw chicken necks the same way with great results as well.
      3. Safe chewing items. These include Bully Sticks, Flossies, and beef tendons which are fibrous and not prone to breaking off in chunks. No rawhides, and no Greenies, these can break off in big pieces, causing your dog to choke, or cause intestinal obstructions, plus they really don't do a good job of cleaning their teeth anyway. I personally know people who have had dogs die after choking on a piece of rawhide.

  3. QUESTION:
Any ideas on how to get rid of my dogs bad breath?
My dog has the worst breath ever. I've taken him to the vet about it but she feels theres nothing wrong with him. I have brushed his teeth, gave him doggie mints, and milk bone dog biscuits but nothing helps. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Dog breath is NOT NORMAL. Bad breath is caused by the bacterica that is growing below the gumline, indicating tartar. If your dog has tartar build up then I would recomend a professional veterinary dental prophylaxis (dental cleaning). You can ask your vet if they do their cleaning with an ultrasonic scaler (this scaler works the best for cleaning but can only be used while your pet is under anesthesia.)Yes Greenies do help but it does not remove the tartar on their teeth that already exsits. Also keep in mind that Greenies are not a low calorie treat, so if your pet is overweight it wouldn't be a great treat for them. Brush your pet's teeth at least once a day and don't use human toothpaste (the reason is because human toothpaste is meant to be spit out VS animal toothpaste does not). Try CET toothpaste, poultry flavor seems to be the all time favorite with dogs. Brushing your pet's teeth once a day will GREATLY reduce the plaque reduction therefore getting rid of doggy breath. I hope that helps some. Also keep in mind bad with bad doggy breath it can also be a sign of dental disease. You said you brought your dog to the vet and she said nothing is wrong. If I were you I would bring your pet to a veterinary practice that specializes in veterinary dentistry. Some vets do NOT like dentistry and you as the pet owner noticed the problem and I would recomend that you bring it to a veterinary dentist. It's also possible your dog could have an abcessed tooth (this too can cause bad breath). Dogs eat as a survial skill, so even if they have soreness in their mouth & are in pain they eat to survive.

  4. QUESTION:
How do i get rid of my dogs skunk breath?

My dog got sprayed so we gave her a bath and everything and the odor is gone but now we have to deal with my dogs bad breath. My dogs breath smells like a skunk spray. Do u have any ideas on what kills the skunk odor from her breath?

    • ANSWER:

  5. QUESTION:
What can help a dog with really bad breath?
my dog has really bad breath, but wont eat any type of denta bone or teeth cleaner, any other suggestions?
he is 12 years old, and my parents wont pay for a teeth cleaning at the vets unfourtunatly

  6. QUESTION:
what can i do to get rid of my dogs bad breath?
i have a 2yr old pek-a-poo. He eats hard dog food but still has bad breath. i did look at his teeth and they are a little brown. its so expensive to take him to the vet. to get his teeth clean. is there any other stuff to try. i do try greenie but didn't help. i was looking at the plaque attack for dogs but i don't know if it really works .

    • ANSWER:
With the combination dog you have, you have a problem. Poodles are notorious for bad teeth and Pekes aren't far behind. If a dog has bad teeth because of a genetic problem, all the brushing in the world is not going to get rid of all the tartar, particularly in the back teeth where most owners don't brush well anyway. If your dog chews things, the best is rawhide and if your dog is a hard chewer you can get rid of most of the tartar that way, however many dogs don't really chew anything so you can't depend upon that to rid your dogs teeth of tartar.
I have 3 out of 5 shelties with terrible teeth and I've tried everything including all the stuff you can put in the water. Nothing worked except getting in there with a scraper and chipping it off. Luckily my dogs are trained competition dogs so I didn't have a problem with that, but if you can't do it with your dog, please make an appointment with your vet for a dental, as bad tartar can become an infection and eventually affect your dogs heart.
ADD ON.....My vet has several clients that feed raw meaty bones and their dogs teeth still develop tartar. It's more of a gene problem than a bone problem and raw bones can crack soft teeth.

  7. QUESTION:

I've tried dog treats mints. And nothing really worked.

  9. QUESTION:
how do i get rid of my dogs bad breath?
my dog has bad breath like not horrible but it still smells do you recommend anything that will cure my dogs breath?

    • ANSWER:
      How old is the dog.

There are several things that cause a bad breath.

First of all there is an upset tummy, but that should last only a couple of days.

Second there is tooth and gum disease. If it is this and you don't get rid of it then you can end up with more problems including osteomylitis which is when the infection goes down into the bone. I have spent over £1000 in antibiotics on an old rescue who had that as it is just too hard to get rid of.

Thirdly it can be a major underlying problem, including kidney failure. That is an unmistakable smell caused by the urea. They would take a blood test for this and other internal possibilities.

Please go to a vet and find out.

  11. QUESTION:
How to get rid of bad dog breath fast?
I'm trying to find out how to get rid of bad dog breath, our 8yr old staffie has terrible dog breath and nothing we have tried so far has worked to fix this problem. I've been advised it's due to many different cause and we have spent a lot of money on our dog trying to sort this out for her, but the problem always returns. Do any other pet owners have this problem with their dog and what worked for you? We feel bad having to shove her off us all the time when we are playing, but her dog bad breath is nasty.

    • ANSWER:
I got our dog a dog breath spray from http://PlaqueAttackSpray.org that worked amazingly well to get rid of bad dog breath on our menagerie.. cats too. It treats the main cause of bad dog breath which is build of of plaque on the teeth and given that your dog is 8 she is likely to have quite a lot, if you haven't treated it already try this spray. It's cheap too, a six month supply is around ; once you have treated the build up, you just use it as needed to maintain health. Dog breath spray is the easiest thing to use to fix bad dog breath.

  12. QUESTION:
How do you cure bad breath for dogs?
My dog has terribly bad breath! Phew! And we tried dog toothpaste, but it just makes her breath worse, because it's poultry flavored! EWW YUCK! How do we cure her bad breath? Please HElP!

    • ANSWER:
Okay, first understand the causes of bad breath in dogs. Dental problems, stomach or digestive problems and poor quality foods just to name three things. The first thing you should do is take the dog to a vet for a check up to make sure her bad breath is not a health or dental problem. Dental problems left untreated will cause other health problems, including heart problems. If her health and teeth are fine try a premium quality dog food. She should be eating that anyway for her healths sake. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova, Merrick and Wellness are a few of the best ones. check out http://www.premiumfoodsonline.com/ Good luck

  13. QUESTION:
What would cause a dog to have bad breath?
I have a chihuahua dog. He is 3 years old, and I have had him for one month. He has some serious bad breath. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

    • ANSWER:
Dog bad breath is caused by bacteria on the top of the tongue, just like in humans. To cure bad breath, this bacteria must be clean off, just like in humans. I have witnessed a Vet clean the top of a dog's tongue with OraBrush tongue cleaner to cure the dog's bad breath. Dog bad breath can also be caused by plaque on the dog's teeth which must also be cleaned off. This requires a visit to the Vet. Cleaning the tongue can be done at home. OraBrush was developed for humans, however, it can also be used for dog bad breath.

  16. QUESTION:
How do you keep dogs breath from smelling?
My dog has the worst breath you could ever smell you would fall over dead if you did smell it so what do i do?

    • ANSWER:
Get a toothbrush and Colgate toothpaste. Put a pea-sized amount on the toothbrush and brush over teeth. Have a bowl of water handy. After you brush the teeth let the dog drink some water. Rinse out the toothbrush. Now, take a little bit smaller amount on the toothbrush and brush tongue. (If dog will let you...lol) After let your dog drink some water. Wait for about 15 minutes. Give your dog three Altoids Mints or if not Altoids Ice Breakers or something like that will work. While your dog eats those, take his or her toys, and wash them, dry them, and spray them with Binaca or Breath Spray. Hope this helped! Your Welcome!

  17. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of my boxer dogs bad breath?
My boxer dog has started to get really bad (fishy) breath and I do brush his teeth and I even got him dog breath spray, is there anything else I can do ? Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
When a dog starts getting smelly breath then it is no good just covering it up with sprays etc, but you need to find out the cause.

It could be coming from his teeth / gums, and could have infection there. If he does and this is allowed to go on then they can get infection setting up in the jaw bone, and that gets very expensive to treat as they can need ongoing antibiotics for years.

The other thing a bad breath can be is the start of kidney failure as the urea in the system causes the breath to really stink. I mean you can smell it from 6 ft away.

It can also be as simple as his diet not agreeing with him. I don't like to push the raw diet onto people, but quite honestly, you never get a bad breath from raw fed dogs unless there is a tooth / internal problem.

So before you just try to mask it then find out what is causing it.

  18. QUESTION:
How do you fix and prevent bad breath produced by a dog?
My dog Pearl, has real bad breath.
How can you prevent this and what is the best and efficient way to stop this.

    • ANSWER:
Firsty have a look in the mouth......is there tartar on the back teeth especially?
If so the vet may need to do a scale and polish and check if any teeth need removing.
Then for prevention the BEST thing is to brush the teeth.
      Also feeding bones.
There is a great dry food out there called Hills prescription diet T/D for teeth diet. This helps prevent tartar and ginivitis.

  19. QUESTION:
How To Get Rid Of A Dogs Bad Breath?
Yes, I have tried brushing her teeth.
Yes, I have tried the dog treats that make dogs breath smell better.
Dont get me wrong, these things do work, but only for a few minutes.
Any tips on how I can get my dog Lila's breath to smell better? (shes not very lady-like with all that bad breath) ;)
    Please&&thankyou
    =)

    • ANSWER:
If her bad breath is permanent, it sounds like it's time for Lila to see her vet to have her teeth and gums checked. She may need a dental, or perhaps they can just do a scaling. Then, with good food and regular brushing, you can look after them from there.

It's really important to look after a dog's teeth because gingivitis can cause serious health problems (heart, kidney e.g.). Let your vet check her and tell you what she needs.

  20. QUESTION:
How can I help my dog conquer his bad breath?
A stinky mouth is certainly not sexy for a human to have and the same goes for animals. When my dog jumps up on me, I can smell his breath and I feel like puking. If it helps, he is a 5 month old male Shih Tzu and he is fed daily on Pedigree Puppy All-In-One Nutrition: Chicken & Egg Flavour with water to top it up. Please help if you can! I love an affectionate dog but preferably not one with bad breath.

    • ANSWER:
At 5 months old your dog is still teething. His adult teeth are coming in, that's why his breath smells.
He doesn't need a dental at 5 months of age.

Once his teeth are all through the bad breath will be a thing of the past. You should get him on a better diet though. Pedigree isn't a premium quality dog food.

    • ANSWER:

  23. QUESTION:
Recommended treats or chews for small dogs that eliminates bad breath?
Hello... I try treat after treat and my dog isn't too into chewing on her nylon bone. I want to know if someone else had the same problem and found a solution? She is 2, has bad breath now.... But not much tartar build up. I just want to know how to freshen her breath, none of the things I've tried have worked.

    • ANSWER:
Getting rid of bad dog breath is pretty easy to do. Chances are, brushing your dog’s teeth on a frequent basis will solve the problem. So, implement that into your routine, and your dog will have fresher breath. But, of course, you need to get rid of the stink right now. Below are a few remedies for bad breath in dogs that are simple and effective.

Water & Baking Soda:Mixing warm water, with a little baking soda can help get rid of bad breath. You’ll want to make it into a paste, so don’t use too much water. Simply take a gauze pad or soft rag, and rub the baking soda mix directly onto your dog’s teeth. This will help remove plaque and tartar, as well as instantly improve their breath.

Minty Treats:Most pet stores will sell minty, dental treats that will help with your dog’s bad breath problem. There are many different kinds of dental dog treats, so read the labels carefully. This is probably the most low-maintenance way to get rid of bad breath in dogs. But, understand that these dog treats will only mask the problem, not solve it.

Dental Dog Toys:There are plenty of different dog toys that help with oral hygiene. Search online or at your local pet store for these toys. They are designed to help scrub away plaque as they chew on them.

Baby Carrots:Another way to get rid of your dog’s bad breath is to give them baby carrots. They are a healthy treat, which will assist in the removal of plaque.

      Hope this helps:)

  24. QUESTION:
Bad dog breath, how do I get rid of it, and what is causing it?
My maltese dogs have the WORST breath. One of them smells like butt, and the others smells like the seafood section of a grocery store. It makes me sick. What can I do?
I try brushing their teeth once in a while, but it dosnt help but for 1 second, and they hate it.

    • ANSWER:
I would take your pups to the vet to have their teeth checked to make sure that it's not a more serious problem and just a case of bad breath. You might find that it's time for a professional cleaning. In the meantime brushing will help and there are also dental treats that you can give them. I like bright bites - it's designed to clean teeth and gums and it comes in different flavors - peppermint, cinnamon and spearmint - to help with the breath - http://www.brightbites.com/.

  25. QUESTION:
Why does my dogs breath smell bad?
My basset hound has really bad breath. I know that all dogs have bad breath but this is worse. I think he might have gum disease or a bad tooth. His gums aren't inflamed and there doesn't seem to be a rotten tooth, but this has been going on for quite a while now.

Any ideas out there of what could be giving my dog such acrid breath?

I appreciate your help. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
Since you believe it's more than just bad breath, it's time to take your dog to the vet this week and let the vet check for infections or abscesses.

We can't give you the good advice your vet can because we cannot smell the dog's breath, and often, a determination can be made by smelling the odor and palpating the gum lines. -!-

  26. QUESTION:
Why does my dog have very bad breath?
I have a 1 in a half year old dachshund. Sheba's had bad breath for a pretty long time now. We even brushed her teeth with some special dog toothpaste. Her breath has not improved at all. We have no idea what to do about it now. I also have a 12 year old lab and he just got bad breath. But that is due to old age. But that's why I am so confused about my dachshund.

    • ANSWER:
Small dogs like dachshunds are especially susceptible to periodontal disease which can cause bad breath, gingivitis and heart disease. It is the number one diagnosed disease by Vets and up to 80% of dogs will have some form of it by the age of 3.

Small dog's have small mouths which makes it tough to get the back teeth. You can brush the teeth but I strongly recommend you also feed Greenies once a day. Greenies are an oral health care product in treat form, so you keep your dog's teeth clean while making him happy. As the dog chews the Greenie, the back of the brush works on the back chewing teeth where a lot of plaque builds up. The bone is soft which allows the teeth the penetrate into the bone and the coarse texture scrapes the plaque off.

Greenies are the number one dental treat recommended by vets, and are also recognized by independent Veterinary Oral Health Council. The VOHC independently conducts a bunch of tests on the Greenie and only certifies products that actually work. Greenies are very effective at removing plaque which will help improve your dogs breath and contain chlorophyl to freshen the breath naturally. It also contains lots of healthy ingredients such as tomato, apple and cranberry so you can feel good about feeding your dog something healthy.

      Hope that helps :)

  27. QUESTION:
What do you do with dogs when they have really bad breath? Please Help?
we are watching 2 dogs and they have really bad breath? what should we do we have tried everything including brush their teeth.

    • ANSWER:
They might need to have their teeth professional cleaned and even some extracted. Bad breath can be a sign of gum disease and sometimes other illness so i'd just let their owners know they should maybe visit the vet soon. Bad teeth can lead to an abscess and it can burst right through the dogs noses. Ok but in the meantime, you can try dental bones or a dog biscuit called breath busters but nothing will fix the problem until they see the vet.

How to clean a dogs teeth really good?
Since we got my dog he has really bad breath and brownish teeth. So we boguht dog toothbrush with chicken flavored toothpaste. I lifted up to side of his mouth and brush what I could, But he didn't like it. He kept trying to push it away. Is their another way besides taking him to the dentist?

    • ANSWER:
I agree the best (only) way to get off tartar is via a professional vet cleaning. With proper care however, you might be able to stave it off for a while doing the following.

      1. Start by getting you pup used to the toothbrush by putting yummy stuff on it like peanut butter and cheese every couple of days. Then you can move up to the cleaning toothpastes or even baking soda. Some of them of pretty gross so try a variety of flavors.

      2. Dental chews like greenies are helpful

      3. Rawhides also help keep the teeth clean.

      4. Cut down on starchy/sugary foods in diet. Also start mixing some veggies into food. You'd be surprised how many dogs really like raw and/or cooked veggies.

Side notes: Brownish teeth are worth getting checked out with your vet. Also, look for the buildup of plaque along the gumline, red or inflamed gums, and especially loose teeth.

Also, don't assume that his teeth are the root cause. Often, pups with sensitive tummies or acid reflux have bad breath and not great teeth.

If your's in an older dog I wouldn't worry too much about this. If younger it's worth a visit to a vet or clinic for a once over. Plaque (just like in humans) can cause other health issues.

I run a site called www.largedogrescue.com so deal with doggie questions a lot.

My dog has the worst breath. My family and I tried to brush his teeth and his beard. So I'm just wondering if there are breath mints for dogs. Well thanks for the answer!

    • ANSWER:
there is a treat called dentabone, it smells minty, and it works for a bit. but it's just temporary. have you had her checked for tooth decay? that can cause really bad breath, and you can get the tooth removed. It might be painful to have a rotten tooth too!

  38. QUESTION:
What is a good chew toy for a large dog? Everyone is pushing their own products so it seems.?
One store says tennis balls are dangerous, another store is pushing the expensive kong toys. Another store is pushing a product that you spray breath paste onto so it kills two birds with one store, although my dog doesnt have bad breath.

Isnt there something a dog will like that I dont have to pay 15 bucks all the time? How about marrow bones, though they could stain my carpet. All feedback and the more the better, Thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
Raw meaty bones are good...but you have to have a good butcher to get them easily.

The Kong may seem expensive, but they usually last for a REALLY long time. You may pay , but then unless your dog is a really aggressive chewer it should last you for 5-10 years easily. I got my first dog six years ago and the kong we bought her then is still in use (we have since bought several more kongs so that we can stuff one and put it in the freezer while she works on another one or stuff several and have a ready supply of frozen kongs throughout the week...plus we have more than one dog now).

Tennis balls are good toys for dogs, but do not make good chew toys as the dog can swallow chunks which could cause blockages and result in expensive vet bills or death.

Nylabones work well for some dogs, but others don't see the point or are too aggessive chewers and will swallow chunks.

Orbees are also great and durable toys, although again very aggressive chewers can probably go through them pretty quickly.

  39. QUESTION:
Another gross animal question - why does my dog suddenly have really bad breath?
Okay. I went to work. When I left, my dog did not have bad breath.

Our dog walker didn't show up today, so my dog was unattended all day :(

When I got home, his breath was rank. Awful. Never smelled worse.

What could cause this? Should I be concerned?

Could he have thrown up and then eaten it?

    • ANSWER:
Dogs will eat some pretty disgusting things without a second thought, including vomit and feces. If the bad breath continues, consult a vet as it could be a sign of liver problems. Your sudden onset, however, is more likely due to something the dog ate.

  40. QUESTION:
Getting rid of Bad Breath in a Dog?
Can anyone give me tips on getting rid of bad dog breath? My 6 year old Pom Mix eats Iams food and treats and her breath is just terrible. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Has she had a dental lately? A lot of toy breeds have problem teeth. Part of it could also be the food she's eating. Do you brush her teeth regularly? It would be best for her to have a dental check-up, she likely needs a cleaning. Tooth and gum disease can lead to very serious health problems - kidney disease for example.

  42. QUESTION:
How do I get rid of my Dog's bad breath?
She is an Australian Cattle Dog and she has the WORST breath! My mom hates it when she gets to close because its so bad. We give her tiny doggie treats that are supposed to help, but of course, those are only temporary. How can I make this bad breathe go away!?

    • ANSWER:
I have the same problem with my pom who is now 15 but he has had this problem since he was 2 years old. Believe me we have tried it ALL... the ONLY thing that helped was having his teeth cleaned and then keeping up on brushing.
One product we tried did help some but not a lot. I got it at the groomers and it was a mint type mouth wash you added to their water. It's active ingredient was chlorphyl.
I noticed some dog foods don't help matters either, Iams was one that seemed to make it even worse.

  43. QUESTION:
How do I make my dog's breath not stink?
My dog has really bad breath, and I don't know what to do to make it not stink so bad.

    • ANSWER:
It may be just doggie breath, but check his teeth and gums just to make sure there is nothing in there causing an infection.

I had a dog once who had a piece of grass or weed that got caught in his gums which caused an infection that caused his bad breath. Unfortunately I didn't catch it right away and the vet had to remove his tooth.

  49. QUESTION:
How to brush a dogs teeth?
My dog has bad breath and I would like to brush his teeth but there is no way I would be able to get him to sit still. Any advice?

    • ANSWER:
You should be brushing your dog's teeth at least twice weekly, daily if you can manage it. It's not as difficult as you might imagine.

How to brush teeth? Step one is to pick an appropriate pet toothbrush. Save yourself time by not buying a child's toothbrush which is usually too hard for dogs. The ideal dog toothbrush will have a long handle, an angled head to better fit the mouth and extra soft bristles. Another option is the finger toothbrush that fits over the tip of your finger.

Step two is to select an appropriate toothpaste. The best pet toothpastes contain enzymes that help control plaque. Try to avoid toothpastes with baking soda, detergents, or salt sometimes found in human pastes. Fluoride may be incorporated to help control bacteria. Rather than placing the paste on top of the brush try to place it between the bristles. This allows the paste to spend the most time next to the teeth.

Step three is to get the brush with paste into your dog's mouth and all the teeth brushed. Most pets accept brushing if they are approached in a gentle manner. If you can start when they are young, it's quite easy, but even older pets will accept the process. Start slowly, you can use a washcloth or piece of gauze to wipe the teeth, front and back in the same manner you will eventually be using the toothbrush. Do this twice daily for about two weeks and your dog or cat should be familiar with the approach. Then take the pet toothbrush, soak it in warm water and start brushing daily for several days. When your pet accepts this brushing, add the toothpaste.

The toothbrush bristles should be placed at the gum margin where the teeth and gums meet at a 45 degree angle. The movement should be in an oval pattern. Be sure to gently force the bristle ends into the area around the base of the tooth as well as into the space between the teeth. Ten short back-and-forth motions should be completed, then the brush should be moved to a new location. Cover three to four teeth at a time. Most attention should concentrated on the outside of the upper teeth.

  50. QUESTION:
How can I persuade my parents to let me have a dog?
I really want to adopt a rescue dog, but my parents have an issue as they think all dogs smell and have bad breath and make a mess. I have tried to explain that there are products such as dental chews available and that i would bath it often and that not all dogs have thick dense smelly fur and that i would opt for a slightly older dog say 2-4 yrs old instead of a puppy so it would probablly not chew up the house and may be house-trained. What else can I do to persuade them?

    • ANSWER:
      You do things like.
Clean your room and KEEP it clean.
      Sweep the floor.
      Do your homework on time.
      Get good grades.
Don't fight with your brothers and sisters.
      Don't talk back to adults.
Eat what your parents give you and don''t make any faces about it.
      Remember to share.
Do research on taking care of a dog and what breed of dog you want.
Ask them nicely and don't whine or beg when you talk about getting a new pet.
